HAARLEM, Netherlands - Chiya Louie, the Boston University softball team record holder for homers, and Great Britain will open the 14th ISF Women's Softball World Championship on Friday (Aug. 15) against Botswana as part of Group B play.
Named to the official fastpitch roster back in April as a shortstop after helping the national co-ed slowpitch team win the 2013 European Championship, Louie graduated cum laude from BU in 2007 with degrees in advertising and photojournalism. In her senior year as an outfielder, she batted .329 with a still-standing school-record 14 homers and then-record 44 RBIs to help the Terriers capture the America East regular season title.
For her stellar offensive performance, she received both All-Conference First Team and ECAC All-Star Team accolades. Louie currently holds the BU career record for homers with 32 and ranks tied-for-second in RBIs at 124.
The ISF World Championship started in 1965 and was the premiere tournament until the sport of softball was added to the 1996 Summer Olympics. Once the sport was removed following the 2008 Summer Olympics, the World Championship rose back to the top.
The tournament has 16 teams participating this year, and the United States owns nine gold medals. Japan is next with two and is the defending champion after beating the U.S. in 2012 in Canada. That year, Great Britain finished 11th.
