Terriers End in Stalemate With Akron
September 12, 2014 | Women's Soccer
BOSTON - The Boston University women's soccer team (4-2-1) settled for a 1-1 stalemate with Akron (2-3-1) on Friday night at Nickerson Field despite its early lead over the Zips. It was the team's first tie but second double-overtime game of the season.
With the offense off to a fast start, Taylor Krebs scored BU's only goal of the game in the tenth minute of play, when she settled a ball punched down by Akron's goalkeeper in front of the goal and sent it into the top right corner of the net to give the Terriers a 1-0 advantage.
Akron came dangerously close to tying it up in the 17th minute when Karina Atkinson took a hard shot from the right that hit the far post and managed to bounce away from the goal to prevent the Zips from taking away the Terrier advantage.
Just over one minute into the second half, however, Akron scored off a corner kick to bring the score to 1-1, to which neither team would add.
The Zips nearly decided it in regulation when they set up another nice play off a corner kick in the 52nd minute, sending a ball high, which Alyssa Parisi caught but narrowly missed letting it cross the plane of the goal line while in the air.
Neither team gained much of an advantage throughout the overtime periods though BU had a short-lived sense of victory when it appeared that Akron had scored an own-goal, though it had actually gone over the crossbar and behind the net.
Both teams were solid on defense, allowing just three shots on goal apiece. Parisi made two saves on the day to prevent a Terrier loss, and takes a 2-1-1 record on the season.
Boston University is back in action on Sunday when the Terriers face cross-town rival Northeastern at 1 p.m. on Nickerson Field.
