NEW YORK - Facing its fourth ranked opponent of the season, the Boston University women's tennis team fell at No. 57 Columbia, 7-0, on Friday afternoon.
The Terriers (4-4) were coming off back-to-back sweeps at home but suffered one of their own to the Lions (5-4), who opened the dual season ranked No. 40. Columbia won the first two doubles matches by a combined score of 16-5 for the first point and then won all six singles points with four coming by way of straight sets.
Columbia entered the month of January featuring three singles players ranked in the top 10 in the Northeast, while BU's junior Johanna Hyoty sat at No. 15.
Riding a five-match win streak, Hyoty earned her first career national ranking on Tuesday at No. 122 overall. She battled Kanika Vaidya to three sets in the top singles slot after dropping the first but ultimately came up short to the Lion who ranked as high as No. 85 nationally back in September. Currently unranked, Vaidya returned to form with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 win over Hyoty.
Junior Lauren Davis and freshman Iryna Kostirko also had solid performances against strong competition in the next two singles spots. Ranked 10th regionally, Rima Asatrian captured enough break points for a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Davis, while former five-star recruit Crystal Leung held off a Kostirko rally to win in a tremendous battle, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
In the six slot, junior Kim McCallum competed against Vivian Cheng in a 6-4, 6-3 loss.
The Terriers will next fly south to Miami, Fla. for three matches, starting with a contest against Southern Mississippi on Monday, March 9.
