CLEARWATER, Fla. - With the score tied in the seventh, the Boston University softball team used three extra base hits to claim a 5-2 victory over Maine on Thursday afternoon at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
Highlighted by a pair of triples and sophomore Gabi Martinez's solo home run, the Terriers (3-14) hit for the cycle in the final three innings to complete the rally against the Black Bears (9-11), who were limited to just four singles and two unearned runs.
Freshman Jilee Schanda delivered the decisive blow with a two-out, two-RBI double and then seconds later scored on senior Emily Felbaum's triple. Sophomore Makinna Akers (1-3) pitched four shutout innings of relief to collect the victory.
Former America East foe Maine took advantage of a passed ball and an error with a two-out, two-RBI single against junior Lauren Hynes in the bottom of the first to grab the early 2-0 lead. Annie Kennedy (1-1) kept the Terriers off the scoreboard through four innings before BU began mounting the rally.
Senior Mandy Fernandez opened the fifth with a single and advanced to third on senior Kendra Meadows' sacrifice bunt and sophomore Moriah Connolly's groundout. Sophomore Brittany Younan cut the deficit in half with a two-out RBI single.
Martinez quickly tied the game with a lead-off homer in the sixth. She then later in the seventh with two outs earned a walk after freshman Emma Wong's triple to put runners on the corners. Schanda's double and Felbaum's triple gave the Terriers a three-run advantage.
Akers allowed a single in the seventh but sealed the victory on a groundout and fly out.
BU will next conclude its spring break trip in Florida at the Michele Smith Break Tournament. The three-day event will begin on Friday (March 13) at South Florida with an 11:15 a.m. start time against Iowa State and then 4:15 p.m. first pitch against the host Bulls.
