CLEARWATER, Fla. - Competing in its final game of the Michele Smith Spring Break Tournament, the defending Patriot League champion Boston University softball team dropped a 6-1 decision to defending Southern Conference champion Chattanooga at the Eddie C. Moore Complex Sunday afternoon.
Highlighted by three doubles and a homer against the Terriers (6-16), the Mocs improve to 17-7. They jumped out with three runs in the first and added three more during the middle innings after BU cut the deficit to 3-1.
Sophomore Brittany Younan led BU with three hits, while freshman Emma Wong had two hits. Senior Emily Felbaum scored BU's lone run in the fourth when she hit an infield single and reached home on sophomore Gabi Martinez's RBI double.
The Terriers had other opportunities to put runs on the scoreboard, leaving at least one runner on base in all seven innings. Younan and Wong hit back-to-back singles in the third and advanced an extra base on a passed ball, but Chattanooga's Cori Jennings (7-3) got out of the jam with a pop up and ground out.
After Martinez's double in the fourth, freshman Kaitlin Sahlinger earned a walk. The Mocs prevented the Terriers from mounting a rally though by earning another ground out and pop up.
Chattanooga got on the board first by taking advantage of two defensive errors with a single and two-run homer against junior Lauren Hynes (3-6). The Mocs followed with a combined three runs off five hits against sophomore Makinna Akers in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings to pull away for the win.
BU will next return to the northeast and open the Patriot League schedule at defending regular season champion Lehigh on Saturday (March 21) with the first pitch of a doubleheader set for 12 p.m.
