Quinnipiac Edges Softball, 2-1
March 8, 2015 | Softball
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Despite freshman Emma Wong hitting her first career homer, the Boston University softball team dropped a 2-1 decision to Quinnipiac during the final day of the FGCU/Four Points by Sheraton Spring Break Classic Sunday morning.
After five scoreless innings, the Bobcats (2-7) had a pair of RBI hits in the sixth and then withstood a BU rally for the victory. The Terriers (1-14) had their opportunities but were unable to get the timely hit against Ashley Herzog (1-1), who finished with six strikeouts against one walk.
Sophomore Brittany Younan led off the bottom of the first with a triple, and Wong followed with a walk and one-out stolen base. Herzog got out of the jam though by earning a pair of strikeouts and an infield groundout. Sophomore Gabi Martinez started the second with a one-out double but was thrown out at home trying to score on sophomore Moriah Connolly's two-out single.
With two outs in the sixth, Brittney Cyr hit a single and stole second base before scoring on Dani Edmands' RBI single. Molly Jarrett followed with an RBI double against junior Lauren Hynes (1-4). Wong cut the deficit in half by finding space in left field and running around the bases quickly for the home run.
The Terriers had one more chance to add a run in the seventh when freshman Jilee Schanda hit a lead-off single and took second on Quinnipiac's interference. She tried though to reach third on a flyout to right field but was tagged after a strong throw from Keilani Finley.
After allowing a single to Martinez, Herzog ended the game by catching an infield pop up.
The teams will meet for the third straight game on Wednesday (March 11) at FGCU's softball complex with first pitch set for 11 a.m.
