BOSTON - Junior Bea Baumberger Altirriba opened the scoring and added an assist to help the No. 17 Boston University field hockey team earned a 3-1 home victory over Lafayette on Saturday to kick off Patriot League play.
Baumberger Altirriba scored off a corner in the 29th minute for the lone goal of the opening half. Fellow juniors Hester van der Laan and Amanda Cassera notched goals after halftime to help the Terriers improve to 5-2 overall and 1-0 in conference play.
Senior Sofi Laurito drew a penalty stroke just over eight minutes into the latter half and van der Laan converted the try to make it a 2-0 contest.
Exactly three minutes later, a direct insert off a corner went to Baumberger Altirriba, who spotted Cassera at the right post. Cassera was wide open and tipped it in for her second goal of the season.
Lafayette spoiled junior Cammy Jensen's shutout bid when Amanda Madigan found the boards off a corner in the 58th minute. Jensen finished the day with three saves.
BU outshot the Leopards, 11-7, but the visitors held a 4-3 advantage in corners. Katelyn Arnold made two saves in goal for Lafayette.
Senior Rachel Coll and junior Taylor Blood each picked up an assist on the opening goal.
The Terriers will return to action next Saturday (Sept. 26) when they travel to upstate New York to face Colgate in a Patriot League contest. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
