BOSTON - Highlighted by senior pitcher Melanie Russell's 16 combined strikeouts, the Boston University softball team finished with a doubleheader split against Bucknell at home on Saturday afternoon.
Pitching ruled the day, as Russell limited the Bison (22-17, 7-4 PL) to just two hits in the 8-0 game-one run-rule victory and Amanda Fazio scattered eight hits for a 5-1 come-from-behind game-two win against the Terriers (13-20, 1-4 PL).
Six Terriers combined for nine hits against three different pitchers in the program's first-ever run-rule win over Bucknell. Finishing 2-of-3, junior Brittany Younan led off the game with a solo shot to right to ignite a four-run inning.
With the bases loaded and two outs, sophomore Emma Wong singled to right center to plate two. Sophomore pinch runner Yinka Fasehun replaced freshman Alex Heinen at third and scored the fourth run before Wong was tagged out during a rundown and stolen base attempt.
Sophomore Jilee Schanda extended the lead to 6-0 with a two-RBI single to left. Wong and senior Lauren Hynes added RBI singles in the fifth to seal the win.
Fazio (12-7) was the only Bison to get on base against Russell (3-7) with two singles. Russell posted eight strikeouts against one walk for her second shutout of the season.
Russell continued her impressive pitching performance against Bucknell through the first 5.1 innings of the second game before Anna Gimmestad finally put the Bison on the scoreboard with a solo homer to tie the contest, 1-1.
BU scored its lone run against Fazio in the third with junior Moriah Connolly singled to center, stole second, took third on a groundout and reached home on junior Gabi Martinez's two-out single.
The Terriers had the opportunity to retake the lead in the sixth when Martinez led off with a single and Wong added a one-out single. Fazio though responded by striking out the next two hitters to maintain the 1-1 deadlock.
Bucknell had a runner at the corners with two outs in the seventh before blowing the game open. Fazio followed Ryanne Rokos' two-out RBI single with a two-RBI triple. Gimmestad then added one more run with the Bison's sixth hit of the game.
The two conference rivals will face off for a third time Sunday at the BU Softball Field with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
