CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - After collecting four wins and a save in five outings, senior Melanie Russell of the Boston University softball team has been named the Patriot League's Corvias Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
Russell had an amazing week in the circle as she tossed 22.2 scoreless innings over five appearances, striking out 32 batters and allowing only 10 hits with no walks. She tossed a two-hit shutout with a career-high tying 10 strikeouts as Boston University topped Lafayette 6-0 in Saturday’s series opener, and closed out the weekend sweep on Sunday by going six scoreless innings with five hits allowed and eight strikeouts in a 5-0 victory.
Russell also threw 2.1 hitless frames with six strikeouts to get the save in the middle game of the series where BU posted a 4-1 win. In non-League action on Wednesday and Thursday, Russell threw a total of 7.1 scoreless innings while picking up the victory against both Bryant and UMass Lowell.
The Terriers will next host Lehigh in a doubleheader on Wednesday starting at 1 p.m.
