POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Marist recorded a combined four homers to defeat the Boston University softball team, 9-3 and 5-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Gartland Field.
With the two victories, the Red Foxes (23-7) extend their win streak to 10 games, as the Terriers (11-18) saw their losing streak pushed to six games behind four one-run losses. After facing an early 1-0 deficit, Marist pulled away behind three homers for the 9-3 win and then rallied from a three-run deficit with the help of a three-run blast in the bottom of the seventh of the second game.
Freshman Alexa Ponce led BU with a team-high three hits and three RBIs, as eight other Terriers combined for 11 hits. Senior Melanie Russell (1-6) was two outs away from giving BU the split against Marist with the help of seven strikeouts before the Red Foxes successfully mounted a rally.
Junior Brittany Younan led off the first game with a walk and then eventually scored with the help of two Marist wild pitches. The Red Foxes stranded three runners in the bottom half against senior Lauren Hynes (8-9) but managed to break through one inning later with five runs off six hits, including a two-run homer and solo shot.
Hynes and Ponce cut the deficit to 5-3 in the fourth with a pair of RBI singles, but the Terriers would be unable to advance a runner past second the rest of the game. The Red Foxes added another solo homer in the fifth against junior Makinna Akers and tallied three more runs off five hits in the sixth to pull away.
Following the loss, BU jumped out ahead early in the second game, as BU loaded the bases with one out following singles by sophomores Kaitlin Sahlinger and Emma Wong along with a defensive error on a grounder by junior Moriah Connolly. Ponce delivered a two-RBI single to right center, and Younan added a sacrifice fly for the 3-0 advantage.
Junior Gabi Martinez extended the lead to 4-0 in the third with a lead-off solo shot, but Marist kept the deficit at three runs with a two-out RBI double in the bottom half.
The Red Foxes only managed two hits against Russell in the following three innings but came alive in the seventh by taking advantage of a hit-by-pitch and error on a dropped foul ball with a game-tying one-out three-run homer. They added a single and two-out RBI double to escape with the win.
The Terriers have a bye weekend in the Patriot League schedule and will next visit UMass on Wednesday, April 13, ar 4 p.m.
