No. 13 Terriers Secure Best Start with 5-0 Victory over UC Davis

BOSTON – The No. 13 Boston University field hockey team secured the program's first-ever 6-0 start to a season with a convincing 5-0 victory over visiting UC Davis on Sunday afternoon at New Balance Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Five different players scored a goal for the Terriers and for three of them, it was their first goal of the year.
- Sophomore Allie Doggett opened the scoring in the sixth minute, firing a shot from the right side that went off UC Davis goalkeeper Beth Lee and in for her first goal as a Terrier. Senior Amanda Cassera earned an assist on the tally.
- Senior Sara Martineau corralled a rebound off a shot by junior Grace Boston and tucked it past Lee for her first tally of the year at the 15:48 mark.
- BU took a 3-0 lead into halftime after senior Taylor Blood recovered a broken corner and blasted a low shot from the right side that found the far boards at 33:17. It was her third goal of the season.
- The Terriers earned two penalty strokes in the second half and converted on one. Senior Hester van der Laan notched her second marker of the year with a stroke attempt that found the left side of the boards in the 41st minute.
- Boston, who nearly scored on two other occasions, capped the scoring when she converted at the right post with 12:43 left in regulation. A pass by Doggett was broken up but the ball found its way to Boston, who sent it home for her first goal of the season.
- Senior Cammy Jensen stopped the only shot she faced before sophomore Kathleen Keegan played the final 12:43 to complete the shutout.
GAME NOTES
- The Terriers recorded 31 shots and only allowed two while holding a 10-1 advantage in corners.
- Lee made 10 saves for the Aggies before being relieved by Chelsea Bigelow, who stopped six BU shots. Kate Young added a defensive save for UC Davis as BU registered 22 shots on goal.
- Cassera's assist on Doggett's game-winner raised her team-high point total to 10. She now has 75 points in her BU career, good for ninth in program history.
- Jensen lowered her goals-against average to 1.19 and raised her save percentage to .774.
- BU got off to 5-0 starts in both 2010 and 2012 before dropping its sixth game each season.
NEXT UP
- BU will conclude its five-game homestand and kick off Patriot League play on Saturday (Sept. 17) when it hosts Colgate. Game time is 1 p.m.
- Saturday's game against the Raiders will be broadcast live on the Patriot League Network.
