BOSTON – After four-peating as the Patriot League champion, the Boston University women's tennis team has drawn No. 15 Duke in a NCAA first-round matchup set for Friday, May 12 at the Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C.
Led by 32nd-year head coach Lesley Sheehan, the Terriers (11-10) this past weekend captured their 26th overall conference title despite being the No. 2 seed by first blanking No. 7 Loyola Maryland and then capturing a combined 11 of 12 singles points against No. 3 Navy and No. 1 Army West Point.
They will make their 17th NCAA appearance at 15-seed Duke (20-5), who won the national title in 2009 and has made 20 consecutive postseason appearances under head coach Jamie Ashworth, compiling a record of 51-19 (.729) over that span. Last season, the Blue Devils fell to Texas, 4-2, in the second round of the NCAAs after BU fell at No. 16 Texas Tech (4-0) in the first round.
BU and Duke will meet for the first time in program history at 4 p.m. In the other Durham Regional matchup, the ITA poll's 22nd-ranked Tennessee Volunteers (18-11) from the SEC will face 19-time Big South champion Winthrop (19-5) starting at 1 p.m.
Friday's winners will face off in the second round on Saturday, May 13, at 4 p.m.
