No. 16 Terriers Post 2-1 Victory over Ball State at Miami Invitational
September 2, 2017 | Field Hockey
OXFORD, Ohio - Senior Grace Boston scored the game-winning goal late in the first half to lead the No. 16 Boston University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Ball State on Saturday at the Miami Invitational. BU improves to 3-0 on the young season.
After allowing Ball State to score on its only corner of the game, the Terriers tied it up on a goal from junior Kara Enoch in the 17th minute before Boston recorded the decisive tally with 3:25 left in the opening half.
How it Happened
- The Terriers outshot the Cardinals, 17-2, and held an 11-1 advantage in corners but Ball State came through on its lone scoring chance when Sierra Jefferson found the cage on a rebound off a corner in the eighth minute of play.
- BU used a corner of its own to score an equalizer as junior Kara Enoch deflected an offering from classmate Maika Akroyd past Ball State netminder Grace Chavez at the 16:32 mark.
- The game-winner came with 3:25 left in the opening half when junior Allie Doggett dribbled down the end line and fed Boston, who scored in front to put the Terriers ahead for good.
- The Terriers threatened to add an insurance goal with a handful of chances in the second half but did not end up needing one after yielding zero shots to the Cardinals after the break.
- Junior goalkeeper Kathleen Keegan allowed the first goal of her BU career but still earned her third win in as many starts.
- Freshman Millie Baker took over the BU cage for the second half but did not face a shot.
- The season-opening shutout skein by the Terrier defense came to an end at 147:40.
- Akroyd's assist was the first point of her collegiate career.
- Freshmen had scored all of BU's goals this season until Enoch and Boston found the boards on Saturday.
- Chavez made four saves for the Cardinals.
- The Terriers are off to a 3-0 start in back-to-back seasons for just the second time in program history (1992 & 1993).
- BU will wrap up play at the Miami Invitational when it returns to action on Monday (Sept. 4) to face the host RedHawks at 1 p.m.
- The RedHawks are 2-1 on the year after falling to UMass Lowell, 2-1, in overtime on Friday.
- BU is 3-0 all-time against the RedHawks including a 2-1 home victory last season.
