BOSTON - Two seniors scored to erase an early deficit on Senior Night and lift the No. 24 Boston University field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Holy Cross on Friday evening at New Balance Field.
The Crusaders stunned the Terriers with a goal in the sixth minute of play but senior
Kara Enoch tied the game soon after and classmate
Ally Hammel scored off a corner with under six minutes remaining in the contest to seal the victory.
BU completed a perfect 6-0 Patriot League season and improved to 10-6 on the year while Holy Cross fell to 3-13 with a 2-4 conference mark.Â
Hammel earned Turnpike Trophy MVP honors for her performance and the win pushed BU's lead in the all-sports competition to 3-0 following wins by both soccer teams in Worcester.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Holy Cross took advantage of a BU turnover in the early stages as Emily Loprete picked off a pass and quickly entered the circle before elevating a shot past Terrier netminder Kathleen Keegan at the 5:45 mark.
- However, that was the only shot on goal the Crusaders were able to muster on the evening.
- Casey Thompson helped the Terriers get an equalizer, as the freshman raced down the field to keep a long pass inbounds before penetrating the circle from the right side.
- Thompson found sophomore Petra Hall in the front of the cage and Hall's shot attempt was tipped up and in at the left post by Enoch at 19:17.
- Holy Cross goalkeeper Marcia LaPlante made four of her five saves in the opening 35 minutes to keep it a 1-1 game at the half.
- BU's defense kept the Crusaders in check and the offense got the decisive tally on the team's seventh and final corner of the contest.
- The play was set up for Hammel at the top of the circle and the senior's shot found the back of the cage at 64:35 on assists from sophomores Kathryn Scheerer and Ailsa Connolly.
- Holy Cross earned its only corner of the contest with just over three minutes to play but the ensuing shot attempt was blocked out of harm's way and the Terriers closed out the win
