Churchill Lifts Women's Soccer Past Lehigh, 1-0

BOSTON – Hosting Lehigh in its Patriot League Nickerson Field opener, Chelsea Churchill's header in the 8th minute proved to be the game-winner as the Boston University women's soccer team downed the Mountain Hawks, 1-0, Saturday afternoon.

- Anna Heilferty worked her way down the right sideline before splitting a pair of defenders at the baseline with a volley towards the box.
- Working off a bounce, Chelsea Churchill headed the ball just inside the back right post to put the Terriers on the board in the 8th minute.
- Heilferty nearly netted a score of her own in the 35th minute, bending a free kick that just veered wide of the net.
- Lehigh had a chance to tie up the game in the 60th minute, as a Mountain Hawk slipped past the backline, but the ensuing shot sailed high.
- After a slow start to the second half, BU ramped up the pressure in the 64th minute when Taylor Kofton crossed in a feed from the far-right sideline that McKenna Doyle headed towards the post, but Lehigh's keeper made a diving save to keep it a one-goal game.
- The Mountain Hawks held a 7-5 edge in second-half shots, but Morgan Messner and the defense tabbed BU's second shutout of the season.
- Churchill's score was the sixth of her career and her first of the season.
- The senior has scored at least one goal in each of her four seasons with the Terriers.
- BU remained undefeated against the Mountain Hawks, improving its all-time mark to 4-0-2.
- Messner earned her second shutout and win of the season in net.
- The Terriers improved their home conference games undefeated streak to 44 games, which ranks second in the NCAA to West Virginia's 45-game streak.
- BU will return to the road for a Turnpike Trophy matchup at Holy Cross on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 7 p.m.
- Former BU associate head coach Casey Brown is in her third season as head coach of the Crusaders.
- Brown spent three seasons with the Terriers, aiding the team to three straight Patriot League titles and was named the 2015 NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
