Holy Cross Holds Off Men's Soccer, 1-0

BOSTON – Despite attempting all eight shots in the second half, the Boston University men's soccer team fell to Holy Cross, 1-0, on Wednesday night at Nickerson Field.

The Crusaders (1-8-0, 1-2-0 PL) scored what proved to be the game winner in the 18th minute against the Terriers (0-9-1, 0-3-0 PL) and were able to withstand a 60th-minute red card.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Making his second start, sophomore goalkeeper Edgar Schottland Levy poked a long service pass that kept traveling over the crossbar in the third minute, and the backline followed up by clearing the game's first corner kick.
  • Rory Birse set up the Crusaders' goal by winning a high ball from Levy and heading it up the field to Max Krause, who ran into the box through a pair of defenders and fired a low grounder inside the left post.
  • After sophomore Kari Petursson attempted BU's first shot at 42:00 by sending the ball over the crossbar from the top of the box, the Crusaders had a shot saved at 43:07 and entered the locker room with a 1-0 advantage.
  • BU earned its first corner in the 48th minute, but the Crusaders were able to get the clear.
  • Holy Cross drew a red card for a dangerous tackle at 59:51 and would be down a man for the final 30 minutes.
  • The Crusaders withstood a free kick and the ensuing corner after the card was handed out.
  • BU had four more corners, but Holy Cross was able to pack the box and keep the Terriers from attempting a shot on goal for the shutout.
GAME NOTES
  • Petursson led the Terriers with three shots, while Levy had three saves.
  • BU finished with a 9-6 advantage in attempts and 6-4 lead in corner kicks.
  • Krause earned his team-leading third goal for Holy Cross.
  • The Crusaders snapped a six-game winless streak and defeated BU for the first time since claiming a 1-0 victory in 2013 at Nickerson Field.
