No. 8 Tennessee, Coastal Carolina Stymie Terrier Offense in DH Sweep
February 9, 2019 | Softball
CONWAY, S.C. – The Boston University softball team's pitching staff allowed just 11 combined hits in 14 innings of work but seven defensive errors and a lack of offensive production resulted in a doubleheader loss to Kickin' Chicken Classic host Coastal Carolina and No. 8 Tennessee on Saturday evening at St. John Stadium.
The Chanticleers (3-1) scored four unearned runs and allowed just four hits to shut out the Terriers (1-3), 6-0. Ashley Rogers then more than doubled freshman Emily Gant and sophomore Ali DuBois' six combined strikeouts to 13 to claim a 4-0 victory for the Volunteers (4-0), who entered the contest winning their previous three games by a combined score of 27-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- CCU drew a walk and advanced the runner on a fielding error before freshman Julia Handfield induced a pair of ground outs to end the threat in the bottom of the first.
- With the bases loaded, 2018 All-Region honoree Courtney Dean took advantage of a lead-off error by delivering a two-out, two-RBI double to right center to grab the lead for good.
- DuBois replaced Handfield in the circle, but the defense committed another fielding error to allow a third run to score.
- The Terriers had their chances to get on the scoreboard, starting in the third with freshman Bella Gargicevich-Almeida getting hit by a pitch and sophomore Jen Horita singling to second.
- The Chanticleers induced a pair of ground outs and shallow pop up to center to end the threat.
- In the fourth inning, freshman Nicole Amodio had a two-out double to left and sophomore Marina Sylvestri followed with a walk, but both were stranded on base.
- CCU earned an RBI single in the fourth and put the game away with Dean's two-run homer in the sixth that was aided by BU's fifth error of the game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Volunteers jumped out ahead in the first inning against Gant with two runs off three hits, including a pair of two-out RBI singles.
- Tennessee added a third run in the second off a sacrifice fly following a single, defensive error and bases loaded walk.
- Gant loaded the bases again with another walk but got a strike out to keep the game within striking distance.
- DuBois relieved Gant in the fourth and induced a 6-3 double play following a lead-off walk.
- Senior Emily Morrow broke up the Vols' no-hit bid in the bottom half with a one-out single.
- Tennessee earned one more run in the seventh by bunting a single, advancing to third on a throwing error and scoring on an infield ground out.
- Sylvestri had a single in the fifth, and senior Alex Heinen followed with a single in the seventh.
- The Terriers though could never advance a runner to second for the shutout loss.
- Morrow led BU with two hits on the day.
- Opponents batted just .212 in the doubleheader but did finish with an 8-1 advantage in walks.
- The Terriers faced Tennessee for the first time since dropping a 9-0 decision in 2004 in New Mexico and Coastal Carolina for the first since earning a 7-1 win in 2012 in Florida.
- The Terriers will wrap up the three-day tournament on Sunday (Feb. 10) at 9:15 a.m. against the Broncs.
- BU won the first meeting between the two schools on Friday via 8-0 run-rule decision.
