Terriers Fall Short at Harvard in Double Overtime, 9-8

ALLSTON, Mass. - Senior Kaitlin Belval scored three goals, capped by a late game-tying tally, but the Boston University women's lacrosse team came up just short in a 9-8 double-overtime loss at Harvard on Wednesday at Jordan Field.

Freshman Kennady Smith had the best performance of her young career, making 14 saves, and junior Kailey Conry had four assists for the Terriers, who move to 3-3 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Down 7-5 with 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Terriers used goals from senior Kelly Mathews and sophomore Bridget McCarthy to draw even.
After allowing the Crimson to regain the lead in the final minute, BU regrouped and sent the game to overtime when Conry found Belval at the top of the crease with 13.3 seconds remaining in regulation.
The Terriers had four possessions in the overtime periods but were unable to generate a shot on goal.
After a free-position attempt by Harvard in the second overtime sailed wide, the Crimson successfully backed up the play and got the game-winning tally from Madison Conklin moments later on a strike from the top right.
BU scored the first two goals of the game but the home team responded with a 4-0 run and kept the Terriers scoreless for over 12 minutes in the process.
Belval ended the drought with her second free-position goal of the contest and a goal by junior Lexi Lewis late in the opening half made it a 5-4 Harvard lead at the break.
Mathews opened the second-half scoring with a tally while Harvard was down a player off a yellow card to make it 5-5 but the Terriers were unable to get a lead after halftime.

GAME NOTES

The Terriers were a perfect 18-for-18 on clears and forced four failed clears.
Belval had a game-high five draw controls and had a team-best six shots.
Lewis and sophomore Nicole Foringer tied for the game high in ground balls with four.
Smith made nine of her 14 saves in the second half.
The Crimson got a 10-save performance from Grace Rotondo.
Harvard held edges in draw controls (11-10) and ground balls (30-23).
Each team forced six turnovers.
