Huerta-Leipner, Gant Sweep Patriot League Weekly Honors
April 23, 2019 | Softball
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – After helping lead the Boston University softball team to a 5-0 record, freshman outfielder Aliyah Huerta-Leipner and freshman pitcher Emily Gant have swept Patriot League weekly honors, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
Batting .400 with two doubles, three homers, seven RBIs and seven runs scored, Huerta-Leipner becomes the first Terrier since Megan Volpano ('14) in 2011 to be named both Player and Rookie of the Week on the same day by a conference. Gant collected a pair of wins with the help of 20 strikeouts in 15 innings of shutout work to claim her second weekly award after being named the top rookie on Feb. 12.
The announcement marks the second time this season BU captured all three weekly awards after senior Emily Morrow (Player), sophomore Ali DuBois (Pitcher) and Huerta-Leipner (Rookie) were recognized back on Feb. 19.
Huerta-Leipner went 8-of-20 for the week, starting off with a 2-of-4 performance in a 4-3 victory over UMass Lowell. She also tallied two runs to help snap the River Hawks' 12-game win streak. She later keyed a 14-1(5) romp at Lafayette by hitting 3-of-4 with four RBIs, three runs scored, two doubles and a homer. In the final game against the Leopards, she became the first Terrier in two years to collect a pair of homers to lead Terriers to a 4-0 victory.
Gant appeared in two games and was nearly flawless by tallying 20 strikeouts against eight hits allowed without a single walk or hit-by-pitch. Facing a 2-0 deficit against UMass Lowell, she entered in relief and pitched the final eight innings to claim a 3-2(9) victory. She held the nation's leading batter, Courtney Cashman (.539), hitless in three plate appearances. She also pitched a complete-game shutout at Lafayette (7-0), while also hitting an RBI double and scoring three runs.
The Terriers will next open a four-game homestand against Dartmouth on Thursday at 4 p.m.
