BOSTON – Making its seventh NCAA tournament appearance in 11 years, the 2019 Patriot League champion Boston University softball team has earned a trip to the Gainesville (Florida) Regional at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium that will take place on Friday, May 17 - Sunday, May 19.
Guided by fourth-year head coach Ashley Waters, the Terriers (37-18) will open against No. 5 national seed and two-time NCAA champion Florida (44-15) with Friday's SEC Network broadcast slated for 2:30 p.m. Pac-12 representative Stanford (32-18) and Mountain West member Boise State (34-14) will battle in the first game at 12 p.m.
Coming off its second consecutive SEC championship, Florida is making its 17th straight NCAA appearance. The 2014 and 2015 national champion Gators have made nine overall Women's College World Series appearances, including a tied-for-fifth performance last season.
The winner of the Gainesville Regional will play the winner of the Knoxville Regional, which features No. 12 national seed Tennessee (39-14), North Carolina (35-18), Ohio State (34-16) and Longwood (37-20), in the super regional round for a trip to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
One out away from becoming a three-time regional finalist in 2014, BU is 7-18 all-time in NCAA action, having won at least one game in five of the previous nine appearances. Last season, the Terriers dropped a 9-0(5) decision at No. 2 Oklahoma and came up just short to SEC member Missouri, 10-8, in the first elimination game.
BU is 1-1 all-time against the Gators with a 4-3 win in 2000 and 5-0 loss in 1998. The Terriers will be making their first-ever trip to Gainesville. They are also 1-1 all-time vs. Stanford with a win in 2001 and loss in 2004. BU has never once faced Boise State.
