Yaloz, Kim Collect Major Awards; Four Earn All-PL Honors
May 3, 2019 | Women's Tennis
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. – After totaling 45 combined singles and doubles wins, freshman Shelly Yaloz earned both Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors and Doubles Team of the Year accolades alongside sophomore Emily Kim, the conference announced Friday afternoon.
Yaloz was one of four Terriers to receive All-Patriot League recognition and was joined by senior Remi Ramos on the first team. Kim and fellow sophomore Lily Burchell were both placed on the second team, as BU was the lone squad to have more than three student-athletes honored.
A native of Queens, New York, Yaloz became the first Terrier since senior Sabrina Faybyshev to collect both Rookie and Doubles Team of the Year awards in the same year. The three-time PL Player of the Week made her presence felt immediately at the Quinnipiac Invitational back in September, posting a combined 8-0 record to win both the B Singles Flight and A Doubles Flight (with Kim). She primarily played at line 2 during the spring and collected singles wins over Dartmouth, Harvard, Lehigh and Navy. In the final two weeks, she moved up to the top slot and collected impressive wins against two-time PL Player of the Year Ana Joyner (Army) and two-time All-PL First Team honoree Kateri Martin (Loyola Maryland).
On the doubles side, Yaloz and Kim carried momentum from their Quinnipiac Invitational title and went on to become the first Terrier duo in five years to reach the quarterfinals at the ITA Northeast Regionals. They would finish with a stellar 25-7 record and won their final 10 matches together, including three in the PL tournament by a combined score of 18-2 at line 2. They defeated Army twice at line 2 after posting key victories against Navy and Lehigh. They also competed in the No. 1 slot and posted wins against Miami (Ohio), Providence, Rhode Island and Binghamton.
Ramos collected nine wins during the dual season, including five at line 1, to earn her third overall All-PL award and second on the first team. The Parkland, Florida, native posted an impressive straight-sets win against Dartmouth to lead the Terriers to their first win over the Big Green since 2011, and later posted wins against Binghamton, Lehigh, Bryant and Lafayette while also winning a set against a nationally-ranked player from Boston College. She wrapped up her collegiate career winning her final three matches at line 2, highlighted by straight-set victories against Army. In doubles, she and Burchell teamed for a 12-4 spring record and won eight straight before dropping a heartbreaker to the Black Knights in the PL final.
A native of Plano, Texas, Kim earned her first All-PL award by finishing second on the team with 19 singles wins. She primarily played in the No. 3 slot and collected key wins against Harvard, Army, Bucknell and Lehigh. She also posted a No. 2 victory against Lafayette and dropped just one game with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the top slot against Holy Cross.
A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Burchell matched Yaloz with 20 singles victories, including 10 at line 4, while also teaming with Ramos for a 16-6 doubles record. She won her final nine singles matches, including two against Army, while also posting wins against Navy and Yale. She also posted notable wins at line 5 against Boston College and No. 3 against Lafayette and Loyola Maryland.
