Fresh off a two-win home weekend, the No. 22 Boston University field hockey team returns to the road with a visit to No. 24 Maine on Friday (Sept. 13). The Terriers will stay in Orono to take on Columbia in a neutral-site contest on Saturday (Sept. 14).
Friday's game against the Black Bears starts at 3 p.m. and will be streamed live on AmericaEast.tv. Saturday's tilt, which is the first-ever meeting between the Terriers and Lions, is a 2 p.m. start.
The Terriers are 3-1 on the young season following home victories over New Hampshire and Northeastern this past weekend. After holding off the Wildcats, 2-1, on Friday, the Terriers rallied from a 4-2 deficit to pull off a thrilling 5-4 win against the Huskies on Sunday.
Maine is winless in three contests this year and most recently dropped a 2-1 contest at Kent State on Sunday. The Black Bears fell to Providence, 5-4, in overtime in their home opener on Sept. 1 after kicking off their season with a 3-0 loss at Rutgers.
Last season, Maine finished the year ranked 19th in the nation and fell to Albany in the America East title game. The Black Bears were second - behind Albany - in the East Division in the 2019 America East preseason coaches' poll.
Senior Brianna Ricker and junior Brooke Salinski each have two goals thus far this season for the Black Bears. Junior Hana Davis has added a goal and an assist. Maine graduated their top three scorers from a year ago and Ricker is the leading returner, having tallied 21 points (9g, 3a) as a junior. Sophomore Nina Keur added 20 points (9g, 2a) as a rookie in 2018.
Sophomore Mia Barley is back in goal after starting all but one game as a freshman. She has a 3.11 goals-against average and a .643 save percentage through three games this season.
BU and Maine have faced off 37 times with the Terriers holding a commanding 30-7 advantage. Last season, however, the Black Bears earned a 2-1 win at New Balance Field to snap a streak of eight straight BU wins in the series.
Columbia is 1-1 on the year after a trip to Iowa last weekend that started with a 5-3 win over Central Michigan and ended with a 3-1 loss to the then-No. 8 Hawkeyes. The Lions rallied from a 2-0 deficit against the Chippewas in the opener. Senior Jennifer Trieschman, who had a team-best 22 points (9g, 4a) in 2018, scored three goals over the two contests while senior Emily McCarthy and sophomores Emma Domich and Allison Smith earned one tally apiece. Junior Alexa Conomikes is in her first season as Columbia's primary goalkeeper.Â
The Lions finished the 2018 season with a record of 8-9 and were tied for fifth in the Ivy League standings at 2-5. Columbia was picked fifth in this year's Ivy preseason poll.
Seven Terriers have found the back of the cage this season and that group is led by junior
Ailsa Connolly, who is off to a terrific start with five goals and a pair of assists. The two-time Patriot League Offensive Player of the Wek currently ranks tied for third in the nation in goals per game at 1.25. Junior
Liz Ryan and freshman
Jodie Conolly have each recorded two goals and an assist while senior
Kiley Gallagher and freshman
Mikayla Crowley have chipped in three points (1g, 1a) apiece.
Freshman
Caroline Kelly is the reigning Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week after totaling 27 saves over the past three contests. She currently sports a 2.33 goals-against average and a .763 save percentage.
