Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Terriers Blank No. 16 Huskies, 3-0, to Clinch Season Series

BOSTON – The Boston University men's ice hockey team blanked intracity rival and 16th-ranked Northeastern, 3-0, in its final road game of the regular season on Friday evening at Matthews Arena.

Graduate student Sam Tucker picked up his third shutout of the season and senior Patrick Curry broke a scoreless tie with his team-leading 19th tally of the year. Junior David Farrance assisted on all three goals, pushing his point total to 43, which breaks the single-season record by a BU defenseman in the Hockey East era.

Junior Cam Crotty and freshman Wilmer Skoog also found the back of the net for the Terriers, who improved to 13-12-8 overall and 10-8-5 in Hockey East play.

BU clinched its season series with NU following a 6-3 home win back on Dec. 7. The teams will wrap up the regular season on Saturday (March 7) at Agganis Arena in a 4 p.m. start.

The Terriers will be either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed for the Hockey East tournament and will visit either No. 3 UMass Lowell or No. 4 Maine.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Neither team was able to get on the board in the opening period with Northeastern looking better out of the gates before BU controlling the latter half of the frame.
  • Just past the 7-minute mark in the second, Curry pounced on a rebound from a Jake Wise offering and backhanded a shot that went off NU netminder Craig Pantano's pad and then a Husky defender's skate and in to open the scoring.
  • Less than a minute after a successful penalty kill, BU doubled its lead when Farrance took a pass from freshman Trevor Zegras and fed Crotty in the slot for a redirect inside the right post at 14:26 of the middle period.
  • Skoog made it a three-goal cushion at 5:23 of the third when he roofed a redirect in the slot off a right-point attempt by junior Kasper Kotkansalo.
  • Tucker never had to make more than six saves in a period and capped his shutout with three late stops when Pantano was pulled for the final 2:30 in favor of an extra attacker.
GAME NOTES
  • Farrance broke Tom Poti's record for points in a season by a Terrier blueliner since the formation of Hockey East as Poti put up 42 points in the 1997-98 campaign.
  • BU nearly doubled up the Huskies in shots, holding a 31-16 advantage.
  • Each team had just one power-play chance and neither converted.
  • Curry and freshman Alex Vlasic each had a game-high three blocked shots.
UP NEXT
  • The Terriers will honor their six-member senior class as well as the 25th anniversary of their 1994-95 national championship team at Saturday's regular-season finale.
  • A win would send BU to Maine for the Hockey East quarterfinals while a loss or tie would result in a trip to UMass Lowell for the best-of-three series for the second consecutive year.
