Amodio Powers Softball to 9-8 Extra-Inning Win at Long Beach State
March 9, 2020 | Softball
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Powered by sophomore Nicole Amodio's career-tying five RBIs, the Boston University softball pulled out a 9-8 victory in an extra-inning wild affair at Long Beach State on Monday morning.
Sophomore Emily Gant (5-2) pitched the final 2.2 innings in relief to help the Terriers (14-7) snap a three-game losing streak to the 49ers (12-12), who are just one of four teams to have beaten 2019 NCAA runner-up Oklahoma this season. Amodio led BU's offense with a three-run homer and two-RBI single. Sophomore Aliyah Huerta-Leipner delivered two RBIs, while junior Jen Horita scored twice and added an RBI.

THE EIGHTH INNING
- Using international tiebreaker rules after LBSU rallied from a 5-0 deficit, BU started with freshman Caitlin Coker at second and advanced her on a fly out.
- After junior Marina Sylvestri moved to second on a hit-by-pitch and stolen base, Gant delivered an RBI grounder.
- Keeping the pressure on, Gant stole second, took third on Horita's two-out RBI single and then reached home on Amodio's two-RBI single to center alongside Horita for the 9-5 lead.
- LBSU moved its runner to third on a ground-out and tried to rally again with a walk and three-run blast to cut the deficit to 9-8.
- The 49ers added a two-out single, but then Gant used a 3-2 pitch to get a force out at second on a grounder for the win.
- Junior Ali DuBois started the game in trouble, as the 49ers got a walk, single and error to load the bases with zero outs.
- The three-time Patriot League Pitcher of the Week induced two force outs at home on infield grounders and followed with a fly out to keep the score 0-0.
- The Terriers drew a pair of walks in the top of the third but stranded both runners in scoring position against 2019 Big West Honorable Mention Ashley Coleman.
- Amodio delivered the first shot in the top of the fourth with a two-out, three-run homer on a 1-0 pitch against Coleman to break up the no-hit bid and grab 3-0 lead.
- LBSU loaded the bases in the bottom half with one out, but DuBois was able to get out of the jam with a force out at home and swinging strikeout.
- Junior Patricia Dun started the fifth with a single, took second on Coker's single and then scored on Huerta-Leipner's two-RBI double to extend lead to 5-0.
- DuBois started the bottom half with a ground out and strikeout, but then LBSU got a walk and finished with three runs off four hits, including an RBI double and two-RBI single.
- LBSU tied the game in the sixth, 5-5, on a one-out triple, RBI double and RBI single.
- With a runner at second and one out, Gant entered the circle in relief and got two outs to keep the game tied.
- Both teams were quickly retired in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
- Becoming the second Terrier to earn multiple homers this season alongside Huerta-Leipner, Amodio previously tallied five RBIs in an 11-6 win over Army West Point on April 28, 2019.
- DuBois finished with five strikeouts and is 12 away from reaching the 500-strikeout milestone.
- BU scored nine runs on just six hits, while the 49ers had eight runs off 11 hits.
- BU moved to 1-3 all-time vs. LBSU following a 9-0 loss last season and 1-0 defeat in 2018.
- BU will wrap up the California trip with five games at Cal State Fullerton's Easton Invitational on March 12-14.
- The Terriers will first face off against LBSU again at 8 p.m. ET and then meet the host Titans two hours later.
- The remaining three games will feature Cal Baptist, Sacramento State and Cal State Fullerton.
