BOSTON - The Boston University women's soccer team won its fifth straight game in convincing fashion, defeating Holy Cross, 3-0, on Wednesday night at Nickerson Field.
Senior
Amy Thompson scored late in the first half to take a 1-0 lead before BU (9-5-1, 5-1-0 PL) added two goals in the second 45 to seal the result. Freshman
Morgan Fagan and junior
Marli Rajacich also found the back of the net, with Rajacich's first collegiate goal closing the scoring.
Sophomore
Abigail McNulty tallied a career-best two assists while juniors
Geovanna Pereira and
Sophia Woodland each provided an assist as well. Freshman goalkeeper
Celia Braun started and made one save while junior
Gretchen Bennett turned aside both of the Crusaders' on-target strikes in the second half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Senior Jenna Oldham recorded the game's first shot on target in the 30th minute, but her try was stopped by Olivia Dubin (five saves).
- Thompson put BU ahead in the 34th minute thanks to hard work and creativity from Fagan and Woodland. Fagan tracked down a ball on the right side and kept in play at the end line. She passed it back to Woodland, who dribbled past two defenders and into the box before sliding a pass towards Thompson. The senior forward needed just one touch to slide the ball into the back of the net.
- The Crusaders responded with their first shot on target in the 36th minute, but Braun was equal to the task.
- Fagan added to the lead in the 52nd minute. BU won a throw at midfield, with junior Kayla Ross getting it back in play towards Pereira along the left sideline. Pereira drew two defenders towards her as she attempted to collect the pass before knocking the ball off a defender and into space for McNulty, who gathered the loose ball and raced up the field. She had plenty of time and space to loft a perfect cross into the box that Fagan headed home for her second goal of the season.
- Holy Cross tried to generate a goal with a shot from distance, but Bennett easily claimed the attempt for the first of her two stops of the evening.
- Off a goal kick, Thompson won the ball for McNulty, who then played a long pass through to Pereira. The junior got to the ball in the box before her defender, which enabled her to play a pass first-time to Rajacich, who smartly began her run up the middle of the field when McNulty launched her pass. This allowed her to arrive at the same time as Pereria's pass and hammer it into the back of the net.
