Waters Signs Multi-Year Extension
December 14, 2021 | Softball
BOSTON – Boston University softball head coach Ashley Waters has agreed to a multi-year contract extension, Director of Athletics Drew Marrochello announced on Tuesday.
Entering her seventh season at the helm, Waters has guided BU on a historic run that includes most recently a record-breaking .900 winning percentage in 2021 and the program's first-ever three-peat as conference tournament champion. In total, the two-time Patriot League Coach of the Year has led BU to four NCAA tournaments and three conference regular season titles with the Terriers combining for 10 PL year-end awards and 37 All-PL honors.
Other highlights under the Amesbury, Massachusetts, native include the program's first-ever win against a No. 1-ranked team in Oklahoma (2018) and the Terriers earning their second-ever No. 3 seed at the 2021 NCAA Regionals.
"Since Ashley's arrival at BU, our success in the Patriot League and beyond speaks for itself," said Marrochello. "We are thrilled to announce this extension and look forward to seeing our softball program reach new heights under her leadership."
This past spring with the help of a PL record-breaking 18-game win streak, the Terriers finished 36-4 while also batting a program-record .320. In the circle, BU posted a stellar 1.26 earned run average that ranked No. 2 nationally with the help of 16 shutouts, including one against ACC member Boston College. Overall, the Terriers placed in the top-65 in 13 NCAA statistical categories as team, including eight in the top-26.
"Representing Boston University for the past six years has been one of the greatest honors of my life," said Waters. "I love my job and the people I get to experience this journey with. My student-athletes are brilliant and dedicated. They've made this job my dream job.
"I am grateful for Drew's belief in this program and am excited to continue to raise the bar in the coming years," Waters added. "This program has always had a tradition of excellence, and I believe the best is yet to come."
Recipient of BU's fourth Patriot League Player of the Year award under Waters back in May, junior Caitlin Coker led the offense in the leadoff slot, batting .431 with 39 runs scored and 17 RBIs, while PL Rookie of the Year Lauren Keleher hit .337 with 19 runs and 15 RBIs. Returning for her fifth year, Jen Horita had a breakout senior campaign in 2021, ranking 10th nationally at .452 batting while adding 21 RBIs and 20 runs scored to claim NFCA All-Region honors alongside fellow position players Coker and senior Nicole Amodio.
The Terriers showed off their depth in the circle this past season with three hurlers collecting Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time in one season since 2012. Recent graduate Ali DuBois collected her third straight PL Pitcher of the Year and All-Region award, while senior Emily Gant earned her second All-Region honor after finishing the year as just one of two, alongside Clemson's ACC Player of the Year Valerie Cagle, to post a batting average above .380 and an ERA below 1.20. Highlighted by her no-hitter at Merrimack, junior Allison Boaz went a perfect 5-0 with a 1.82 ERA.
BU has also been impressive in the classroom, boasting a cumulative 3.58 GPA for the 2020-21 academic year with 17 Terriers earning a spot on the PL Academic Honor Roll and 13 claiming NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete recognition. Both Coker and Gant received CoSIDA Academic All-District Team honors and were joined by Amodio on the Academic All-PL squad.
Owner of an all-time record of 179-103 (.635) and 76-15 (.835) mark in Patriot League play, Waters joined BU in the summer of 2015 as the program's seventh head coach. She previously spent three seasons as an assistant at Harvard after batting a career .352 over a four-year period at Maine. She was inducted into the Black Bears' Hall of Fame in the fall of 2017. The former infielder was also the 2005 recipient of The Boston Globe Will McDonough Award as Massachusetts Female Athlete of the Year.
