December 17, 2021 | Softball
BOSTON – Highlighted by a pair of games with 2021 Women's College World Series participant Georgia and at least one matchup against all five major conferences, the three-time defending Patriot League champion Boston University softball team has announced its 2022 schedule.
In total, the Terriers and seventh-year head coach Ashley Waters will compete in 16 contests against squads that posted a top-100 RPI this past spring with nine teams reaching the NCAA tournament. BU will be on the road for the first 25 contests before opening the home slate against Merrimack on Tuesday, March 22, in a doubleheader set for a 2 p.m. start.
The program's 35th season will get underway with BU opening against ACC power and 2021 regional finalist Notre Dame at Charlotte's Green & Gold Classic in the first-ever meeting between the two programs on Friday, Feb. 11. The Terriers will face the Fighting Irish twice and the host 49ers two times as well during the two-day event.
Over the next two weekends at Georgia's Red & Black Showcase (Feb. 18-20) and the Clemson Classic (Feb. 25-27), the Terriers will play four games against squads that joined them in the 2021 NCAA tournament, including the two host schools and NEC champion St. Francis, while also battling Big 10 member Purdue.
BU will continue its annual tradition of flying west for spring break, playing 12 games in the state of California from March 4-12. The Terriers will first participate in the San Diego Classic on March 4-6 with notable matchups against Pac-12 member California and also San Diego State. After visiting Cal State Fullerton midweek for games against both the Titans and Penn, they will wrap up the trip at Big West champion Long Beach State's Louisville Slugger Invitational with highly anticipated contests against the tournament host and two 2021 NCAA regional finalists, UCF and Iowa State.
Following a 10-day period to recharge, the Terriers will host in-state foes Merrimack (March 22) and UMass Lowell (March 23) in doubleheaders on back-to-back days. They will then open their Patriot League regular season title defense at Lafayette with three games scheduled on March 26-27.
BU has non-conference games scheduled at UConn (March 30), Harvard (April 5 DH) and Providence (April 10 DH). The Terriers will also host UMass on April 13 and Boston College on April 20.
During conference play, BU will host Bucknell (April 2-3) and Holy Cross (April 16-17) in weekend series before visiting Colgate (April 23-24) and Army West Point (April 30-May 1). The regular season will end at home with Lehigh paying a visit to Boston on May 7-8.
The Patriot League tournament will feature the top four teams in the standings with the top seed hosting on May 12-14.
