WORCESTER, Mass. – A late goal by junior Rebecca Janes lifted the Boston University field hockey team to a 2-1 season-opening victory over Holy Cross on Sunday afternoon at Hart Turf Field.
The Terriers got on the board just two minutes into the contest on a corner goal by senior Kathryn Scheerer. Holy Cross got an equalizer late in the first quarter and the teams went into halftime tied, 1-1.
After 44 straight minutes of scoreless play, Janes notched the winner with 2:50 remaining in regulation.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Janes had a hand in both BU goals as she inserted to Scheerer off a corner for the opening goal.
- Scheerer collected the insert before drilling a shot inside the left post at the 2:00 mark.
- With 2:05 left in the first quarter, Kristen Weber tied up the game for the Crusaders when she sent in a rebound.
- The score would stay at 1-1 for the vast majority of the game as chances were thwarted on both ends of the field with the teams looking to break the draw.
- All of the Crusaders' corners came in the second quarter but the Terriers successfully defended all three.
- The Crusaders were boosted by a pair of defensive saves while deadlocked with one coming midway through the second quarter and another in the opening seconds of the final quarter.
- Holy Cross generated a strong scoring chance in the 44th minute of play but BU goalkeeper Caroline Kelly was up to task, knocking away a shot at the goalmouth.
- Janes performed her late heroics by dribbling across the top of the circle before cutting into the left side and drilling a perfectly placed reverse stick drive to the boards at the 57:10 mark.
GAME NOTES
- BU held a 13-11 advantage in shots and earned seven corners while allowing only three.
- The Terriers have now won six straight season openers.
- Kelly made four saves to pick up the win in goal while Holy Cross got four saves from Emma Skumurski in addition to the two defensive saves.
- BU has now won 23 straight meetings against the Crusaders dating back to 1983.
UP NEXT
- The Terriers have a bye next weekend and will return to action on Sunday, March 21, when they visit Lafayette.
