Softball Earns Second-Ever No. 3 Seed in Stillwater NCAA Regional Draw
May 16, 2021 | Softball
BOSTON – Competing as a No. 3 seed for the second time in program history, the now three-time defending Patriot League champion Boston University softball team has earned a trip to the Stillwater (Oklahoma) NCAA Regional at Cowgirl Stadium that will take place on Friday, May 21 - Sunday, May 23.
Guided by sixth-year head coach Ashley Waters, the Terriers (36-2) will open their 11th overall NCAA appearance against Mississippi State (33-23) with the ESPN3 broadcast slated for 4:30 p.m. ET. Regional host, Big 12 runner-up and No. 5 national seed Oklahoma State (42-9) will battle Big South champion Campbell (27-17) in the first game at 2 p.m. ET.
The winner of the Stillwater Regional will play the winner of the Austin (Texas) Regional, which features No. 12 national seed Texas (39-11), Texas State (38-12), Oregon (37-15) and St. Francis Pa. (40-8), in the super regional round for a trip to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City.
One out away from becoming a three-time regional finalist in 2014, BU is 7-20 all-time in NCAA action, having won at least one game in five of the previous 10 appearances. The Terriers were a No. 3 seed for the first time in 2012 when they bounced back from a 3-2 loss to Arkansas with a 4-3(13) thrilling victory over Iona before being run-ruled by No. 1 national seed California, 8-0(6). In their last appearance in 2019, they dropped a hard-fought 3-0 pitchers' duel at No. 5 national seed Florida and then were undone by five costly errors after grabbing an early lead in a 13-2(5) loss to Stanford in the first elimination game.
BU is 0-1 all-time against the Bulldogs, dropping a 4-2 decision during a 2000 non-conference matchup in Florida. The Terriers have never been to Stillwater but have faced Oklahoma State four times previously, including a 1-0 defeat in the 2003 NCAA Regional opener at Cal State Fullerton. They could also potentially meet Campbell for the first time since 2003 when the Camels pulled out a 6-5 decision in Raleigh, North Carolina.
The Terriers will enter the regional with the nation's second-longest active win streak, a Patriot League record 18 games, and the NCAA's longest active road win streak, 17 games.
Due to the NCAA's limited capacity guidelines, tickets will go on sale one hour prior to each game at the stadium. The only seats available for purchase are tickets that go unused from the team allotments.
