BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After earning their 27th conference title and battling No. 12 LSU to the end in the NCAA opener, the Boston University women's tennis team has collected two major Patriot League awards along with three All-Conference honors.
Head coach Lesley Sheehan was named PL Coach of the Year for the fifth time, while reigning PL Tournament MVP Kaitlin Tan received Rookie of the Year accolades. Tan was also joined by fellow freshman Victoria Carlsten on the first team, as sophomore Erica Di Battista claimed second team accolades.
A USTA New England and BU Athletic Hall of Famer, Sheehan ('84) guided the Terriers to their first NCAA appearance since 2017 and 18th overall by posting a 10-1 record. The Reading, Massachusetts, native received her fifth Coach of the Year award from the PL for her efforts and currently sits at an incredible 425 career victories. BU went a combined 48-15 (.762) in singles and 22-11 (.667) during doubles play this spring. In the NCAA matchup at LSU, the Terriers made program history by winning their first-ever doubles match and also winning two sets against a national-seeded opponent.
Tan helped lead the charge with combined 18-2 record in singles and doubles for BU's second consecutive Rookie of the Year award. A native of Tacoma, Washington, she won all six of her completed No. 2 matches in straight sets and was in a 6-3, 1-6, 1-1 tie at LSU when her match was halted. She also pulled out a quality victory at No. 3 against Boston College and won all 12 games in the same slot against UConn. In doubles action, she teamed with 2019 Rookie of the Year Shelly Yaloz for a 6-1 record at line 3, highlighted by the 6-1 NCAA victory over LSU's Safiya Carrington and Maggie Cubitt.
A native of Malmo, Sweden, Carlsten collected four singles wins, including a straight-sets victory over Navy at line 1 in the PL title match. She also went 7-3 in doubles, highlighted by wins over Navy, Army West Point and Rhode Island. She and Di Battista were on a four-match win streak before they came up short to LSU's No. 84 nationally-ranked duo of Taylor Bridges and Paris Corley.
Di Battista earned her first All-Conference honor after her stellar start to the rookie season was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic. She was 15-4 in singles and went 6-1 this year with a straight-sets win over Navy in the title match. She also won a set during the NCAAs against No. 60 Corley for a 6-4, 1-4 lead when her match was halted.
