Field Hockey Falls to UMass Lowell, 4-0

BOSTON - The Boston University field hockey team was handed a 4-0 setback by UMass Lowell on Friday evening at New Balance Field. The Terriers move to 2-3 on the season while the River Hawks improve to 2-1.

- UMass Lowell scored twice in each half to come away with a victory in the teams' first meeting since 1988.
- The visitors earned back-to-back corners in the early stages and capitalized on the latter at the 3:54 mark as Lara Ansaldi found Jenna Berger for a redirect at the right post and a 1-0 lead.
- The River Hawks doubled their lead with 3:14 left in the opening half as Mirthe Gans collected a rebound and sent it to the boards from the right-center of the circle.
- BU got its first corner in the final second of the half, presenting an opportunity to halve the deficit before entering the break.
- The play was set up for sophomore Tess Csejka at the right post but her attempt went through the goalmouth and just wide of the cage.
- The Terriers came out aggressive after halftime, earning three third-quarter corners, but were unable to take advantage of them.
- Lowell put the game away in the fourth with goals just over five minutes apart.
- Berger notched her second goal of the night with a tip off an effort by Berbel Rozema in the opening moments of the final quarter.
- Ansaldi capped the scoring at 51:49 when her shot from just inside the circle eluded BU netminder Kate Thomason.
- The Terriers pulled Thompson in favor of an extra attacker for the final 4:08 but could not get on the scoreboard.
- Junior Gianna Pantaleo and sophomores Pili Alvarez and Brooklyn Lamb all made their first starts of the season for the Terriers.
- Lowell held a 10-6 shot advantage and got three saves from Eleonore Boekhorst.
- Junior Caroline Kelly and Thomason each played a half in goal for BU and made a save apiece.
- The River Hawks had a 6-4 edge in corners.
- The Terriers return to action on Sunday (Sept. 12) when they make the drive down Commonwealth Ave. to take on third-ranked Boston College.
- Game time in Newton is set for 1 p.m
