April 19, 2022 | Softball
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After helping lead the Boston University softball team to a 4-0 performance, junior pitcher Lizzy Avery and junior infielder Caitlin Coker have earned Patriot League weekly honors, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
Boaz earned both a no-hitter and one-hitter to collect two wins and a .027 opposing batting average for her second Pitcher of the Week award this season. Coker batted .571 in the lead-off slot with five runs scored and five stolen bases to become the fourth different Terrier to earn Player of the Week accolades, as the Terriers increased their awards haul to 13 total.
A native of Alameda, California, Avery began the week by becoming the second-ever Terrier in 22 meetings (first since 1996) to shut out UMass on Wednesday in a 6-0 victory with the help of 10 strikeouts. She then became the first PL pitcher since 2007 to earn a second no-hitter in one season with an 8-0(5) win over Holy Cross this past Saturday with the help of four strikeouts against three walks. She had previously no-hit Merrimack back on March 22 while collecting 10 strikeouts.
Coker earned multiple hits in three of the four contest, starting with a 2-for-4 performance against UMass in which she posted a personal-best four stolen bases, one shy of the program and PL record, and added two runs. The Downingtown, Pennsylvania, native, then went 4-for-7 in Saturday's DH sweep over Holy Cross with two doubles and a run before going 2-of-3 with a homer and two runs in the third matchup. She was also part of nine outs for a perfect fielding percentage at third base.
The Terriers will next host Boston College on Wednesday with the ESPN+ broadcast set for 3 p.m. BU is currently second in the country with a 19-game win streak and a 23-game home win streak.
