BOSTON - Redshirt senior
Amy Thompson scored her first goal of the season, but the Boston University women's soccer could not overcome Boston College in a 3-1 loss on Sunday afternoon at Nickerson Field.
BU falls to 2-4 on the year, while BC improves to 4-1-1 in 2022.
Thompson's tally would stand the rest of the first half to give the Terriers a 1-0 lead after 45 minutes. However, the Eagles found the equalizer in the 54th minute, and later scored twice in a span of 2:10 to pull away for the win.
Junior
Abigail McNulty totaled an assist on BU's score to boost her team lead to six points on the season. Senior goalkeeper
Gretchen Bennett made three saves in the effort.
Emily Sapienza and Ella Richards each recorded a goal and an assist to pace Boston College. Wiebke Willebrandt collected three saves between the posts.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Eagles recorded three shots in the opening 10 minutes, but McNulty had the best offensive chance in the 10th minute when she caught up to Bennett's booming kick and ripped a shot inside the penalty box, but it sailed wide.
- McNulty started the play that led to BU's goal by taking the ball away in BC's box, and sending it to her right for Thompson, who beat Willebrandt and finished by the left post.
- In the 24th minute, Bennett made her first save on a direct kick from Eabha O'Mahony. Thompson almost secured a brace on the ensuing play in transition, but lifted a shot wide.
- The Terriers' first shot in the second half came from junior Lily Matthews, whose blast from the middle was turned away by Willebrandt.
- Two minutes later, Boston College was awarded a penalty kick that Sapienza buried into the net for the equalizer.
- In the 56th minute, Matthews narrowly missed the go-ahead score when she received senior Marli Rajacich's feed in the box. Willebrandt made a leaping grab for the stop.
- The Eagles took the lead in the 72nd minute, when Richards sent a lead pass down the middle of the field for Sam Smith, who finished top-middle.
- In the 74th minute, Sapienza gained possession in the right corner of the attacking third, and crossed to Richards for BC's third goal of the game.
- Freshman Giulianna Gianino sought to cut BU's deficit to one with a shot in the 85th minute, but Willebrandt was there for the save.
