Roncin, Boaz Lead Terriers to 10-0 Run-Rule Romp at Cal State Fullerton
March 8, 2023 | Softball
FULLERTON, Calif. – In a near-perfect performance, the Boston University softball rolled to a 10-0 run-rule victory at defending Big West champion Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday night.
Junior and reigning Patriot League Player of the Year Kayla Roncin collected a career-high four hits to lead the offense, while senior and reigning PL Pitcher of the Year Allison Boaz (9-2) tallied six strikeouts on her birthday, as the Terriers (16-5) claimed their ninth run-rule victory of the season. Owner of earlier wins against then-No. 3 Florida, No. 8 Tennessee and No. 24 Oregon, the Titans (11-11) entered the week at No. 17 in the RPI rankings and managed just two hits in their most lopsided defeat of the season, topping an earlier 8-0 (5) loss to No. 2 Oklahoma.
Senior Caitlin Coker matched Roncin in reaching home plate three times apiece, as she went 3-for-4 with an RBI to help BU post a season-high 13 hits. In total, six Terriers earned at least one RBI with freshman Brooke Deppiesse and graduate student Nicole Amodio posting two apiece.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Junior Lauren Keleher (BB), Roncin (1B) and Coker (1B) started the game by loading the bases against 2022 All-Big West Freshman Team member Raci Miranda (3-4).
- After the Titans earned a force out at home, graduate student Emily Gant put the ball in play and plate Roncin with Coker also scoring thanks to a throwing error.
- Amodio skyed a ball to right to extend the lead to 3-0.
- After Boaz earned two strikeouts in the bottom half, sophomore Tyesha Williams started the second with a walk and eventually scored on Roncin's RBI single up the middle.
- The Terriers left the bases loaded in the top of the third, but it wouldn't matter, as Boaz struck out the side in the bottom half.
- Roncin started the fourth with a double and later scored alongside Coker on Deppiesse's two-RBI double down the left field line.
- CSUF earned a one-out single up the middle of the fourth before Boaz retied the last five Titans.
- BU put the game in run-rule territory with four runs off five hits in the fifth inning, including RBI singles from Roncin, Coker, junior Lauren Nett and Amodio.
- Roncin's four hits tied Keleher's four hits against College of Charleston for the most by a Terrier this season.
- With two walks, Keleher sits at 69 total, one shy of reaching the top 10 in the program record book.
- Boaz is currently No. 8 all-time at 14 shutouts and owns 36 wins, one away from cracking the top 10.
- BU has now shut out three teams that competed in the NCAAs last year - Cal State Fullerton, Georgia Tech and South Florida.
- The Terriers evened the all-time series with the Titans, 3-3, behind their first-ever shutout after claiming a 12-3 road win last season in which BU scored six of the runs in the top of the seventh.
- BU will have a quick turnaround and next visit Long Beach State on Thursday (March 9) to face defending Big Sky champion Weber State at 1 p.m. ET and No. 12/16 Baylor (3:30 p.m. ET), who defeated Cal State Fullerton, 5-2, in the Titans' first game of the doubleheader.
- The Terriers will face Weber State for the first time in program history and the Bears for the first time since 2004.
