No. 25 Softball to Face No. 22/23 Virginia Tech in NCAA Athens Regional

May 14, 2023

BOSTON – Competing as a No. 3 seed for the third time in program history, the Patriot League champion and 25th-ranked Boston University softball team will open the 2023 NCAA tournament against No. 22/23 Virginia Tech on Friday (May 19) at the Athens Regional, held at Georgia's Jack Turner Stadium.

The Terriers (51-8) will face the Hokies (37-18) at 2 p.m. on ACC Network before No. 11/13 Georgia (39-13), the regional host, takes on No. 4-seed North Carolina Central University (19-33) at 4:30 p.m. The Bulldogs are the No. 14 seed in the overall NCAA bracket. The double-elimination tournament will continue on Saturday (May 20) with the championship round scheduled for Sunday (May 21).

BU enters its 12th NCAA appearance with a program-record 51 wins after claiming its fourth Patriot League tournament title in six years this past Saturday with a 2-0 victory over Army West Point. Virginia Tech fell to Florida State in the ACC semifinals, while Georgia lost to South Carolina in the SEC quarterfinal round as both Power 5 teams earned at-large berths. NC Central is making its NCAA tournament debut after capturing its first MEAC title.

The Terriers, who also earned a regional No. 3 seed in 2012 and 2021, are 7-22 all-time in NCAA action, having won at least one game in five of the previous 11 appearances. BU has three previous meetings with Virginia Tech taking all three. They last met in 2010, as the Hokies posted a 3-1 victory in Clearwater, Florida.

BU earned a split in the first-ever meeting with Georgia one year ago, first posting a 6-1 win over the 13th-ranked Bulldogs and then a 8-1 loss in Athens. BU has never faced the Eagles.

The winner of the Athens Regional will advance to the NCAA Super Regional against the winner of the Tallahassee Regional featuring No. 3 national seed Florida State along with South Carolina, UCF and Marist.
