BOSTON – The Boston University field hockey team will head north for a pair of games to kick off its September schedule. The Terriers will face Maine on Friday (Sept. 1) before taking on Ohio in a neutral-site contest on Saturday (Sept. 2).
Friday's contest will start at 2 p.m. while Saturday's will be a 1 p.m. start.
TERRIER TIDBITS
- BU opened its season at home last Friday and fell to Michigan State by a score of 3-1.
- Sophomore Martu Coulo scored the Terriers' goal on a highlight-reel effort that was featured in the NFHCA Plays of the Week.
- Junior Payton Anderson was named the 2023 Patriot League Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and was joined on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team by Coulo and seniors Thalia Steenssens and Rachel Borzymowski.
- All four Terriers were named to the NFHCA Division I Watchlist on Thursday.
- The Terriers return four of their top five scorers from last season.Â
- This year's squad features 10 newcomers as nine freshmen have joined the program and sophomore Caroline O'Brien transferred from Wake Forest.Â
SCOUTING MAINE
- The Black Bears unveiled a brand new field hockey complex and are the starting the season on a nine-game homestand.
- Maine opened its schedule with a 3-1 loss to No. 17 Boston College before rebounding with a 2-0 triumph over Providence on Sunday.
- Sophomore Mallory Mackesy scored a goal in each game while senior Poppy Lambert also found the back of the cage against the Friars.Â
- The Black Bears, who have won back-to-back America East regular-season titles, were picked second in the conference's preseason poll.Â
- Lambert, Mackesy and senior Tereza Holubcova were all named to the NFHCA Division I Watchlist.
BU-MAINE SERIES HISTORY
- BU is 31-9Â all-time against the Black Bears and snapped Maine's three-game win streak in the series with a 5-2 win last season when the Black Bears were ranked No. 23 in the nation.
- The previous five meetings before 2022 were all been decided by a single goal.
SCOUTING OHIO
- The Bobcats are opening their season with a pair of games against Patriot League opponents as their lone game thus far was a 5-1 loss at American.
- Ohio was picked fifth in the MAC preseason poll.
- Fifth-year senior Katelyn Whittle scored the Bobcats' lone goal against American.Â
- Whittle is the team's leading returning scorer after tallying 16 points on seven goals and two assists in 2022.Â
BU-OHIO SERIES HISTORY
- BU and Ohio are meeting for the first time since 2019 when the Terriers earned a 4-1 road win to improve to 3-0 in the all-time series.
UP NEXT
- After its first road trip of the season, BU will return to action on Friday, Sept. 8, when it hosts crosstown rival Boston College.
