BOSTON - The Boston University field hockey team's late comeback attempt fell short on Sunday afternoon as the Terriers dropped a 4-2 contest to Northeastern at New Balance Field.
With BU trailing 3-0 early in the fourth quarter, junior
Caroline O'Brien and senior
Payton Anderson scored goals just over a minute apart to get the Terriers within one. The Huskies added a late goal with BU's goalkeeper pulled to create the 4-2 final.
BU moves to 5-7 on the year while Northeastern improves to 8-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Northeastern had the only three shots in the opening and all were on goal but graduate student Kate Thomason turned aside each chance to keep the game scoreless.
- The Terriers put together a better second quarter but the Huskies scored on each of their two shots in the frame to take a 2-0 lead into the break.
- Emilia Adragna opened the scoring on a reverse-stick drive at the top of the circle at the 19:35 mark.
- The Huskies used a corner to double their lead as Lara Taylor put a redirect high into the netting off a ball from Lauren Rowe at 24:22.
- The visitors controlled the play in the third and were able to secure a three-goal cushion when Adragna got her second of the day in the 40th minute with a reverse try in the middle of the circle off a corner pass by Rowe.
- BU was the aggressor in the start of the fourth and was rewarded by quickly finding itself back in the contest.
- Off a restart on the left side, junior Martu Coulo sent a hard ball into the circle, where O'Brien tipped it towards the goal and past NU netminder Kristi Merashoff 1:24 into the fourth.
- The Terriers built on the momentum and earned a corner a minute later on which an Anderson shot went off the body of a Husky defender to earn a penalty stroke.
- Anderson took the try and placed the ball in the lower left corner of the cage for her team-leading eighth goal of the season, making it a one-goal game with 12:22 to play.
- Thomason was pulled in favor of an extra field player with just under four minutes to play.
- Taylor reestablished a two-goal lead for the Huskies at the 57:05 mark by dribbling in through the right side and sending a ball into the far corner of the empty cage.
- BU continued to battle and put back-to-back shots on goal from O'Brien and junior Natalie Epperson in the 59th minute but Merashoff stopped both attempts.
