BOSTON – As part of the long-term strategy to transform the Boston University Softball Field, the Boston University Department of Athletics is excited to unveil to Terrier Nation the completion of Phase Two with Tuesday's home doubleheader against Yale.
A generous contribution from former Vice President Todd Klipp and his wife Anne Klipp led to the completion of Phase One in 2019 with the installation of a state-of-the-art Daktronics 13HD videoboard ranging 9.5 feet high and 27.5 feet wide. It features a virtual customizable stat bar that can include text, graphics, motion graphics and animations, creating a enhanced in-game experience for student-athletes and fans.
Phase Two started this winter with the installation of 1,000 linear feet of new fencing surrounding the entire field and bullpens. The addition of extra padding allows for more branding opportunities and for the first time, a display of the program's All-Americans –
Kayla Roncin (2023), April Setterlund (2009, '10, '11) and Audrey West ('96).
Fans and alumnae will quickly notice the replacement of the chain link backstop with tension netting system and padded backstop, supported by four 30' steel poles, that will provide a better viewing window behind home plate. Other enhancements include finishes in both home and visiting dugouts with new paint, flooring, benches, arm rests and bat racks.
"Watching the transformation of the field has brought our program great joy," said head coach
Ashley Waters. "We pride ourselves on raising the ceiling and striving to represent those who came before us. The field improvements are a direct reflection of the heart and soul of every student-athlete who has worn this uniform. The support from administration, incredible donors and this remarkable institution has given us a home field that continues to push us in the direction of excellence. With an abundance of pride, we will take the field knowing we are paving the way for the future of BU Softball."
The program will next focus on Phases Three and Four, which are comprised of the installation of an artificial turf and the creation of an entrance way that is on par with the new updated field. The plan is also to enhance the fan amenities and seating.
Opportunities to support both of these phases still exist, as do chances to name spaces within the facility. Please contact director of athletics development Kyle Shawgo at (617) 353-1063 or
