March 19, 2024 | Softball
BOSTON – Entering the home opener nationally ranked for the first time ever, the No. 24 Boston University softball team rolled to a doubleheader sweep over Yale on Tuesday afternoon.
The Terriers (22-3) used a five-run fifth inning to claim a 7-1 game-one victory and then rolled in the second contest to a 7-0 win, as sophomore Kasey Ricard (9-2) held the Bulldogs (6-16) to just two hits in the shutout performance. With the two wins, BU extended its NCAA leading active home win streak to 19 contests and also snapped Yale's four-game win streak
Senior Kayla Roncin led the offense, batting a combined 5-for-8 with five RBIs and two runs scored, while freshman Kylie Doherty delivered a two-RBI hit in both contests. Graduate student Allison Boaz (9-1) tallied eight strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work during the first game against three hits allowed and combined for three hits of her own in the DH. Classmate Audrey Sellers crouched behind home plate for both pitching gems and batted 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

GAME 1: BU - 7, Yale - 1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Boaz started off striking out the side and seven of the first 10 Bulldogs.
- BU had a Terrier reach second in each of the first three innings but was unable to get on the scoreboard.
- The Bulldogs' Carolyn Skotz helped Yale get on the scoreboard first by doubling to right, taking third on a sac bunt and reaching home on an RBI grounder.
- Meredith Henderson earned her first quick 1-2-3 to maintain the 1-0 lead entering the fifth inning.
- Trying to extend the lead, the Bulldogs earned a pair of singles against Boaz, but Sellers ended the threat by throwing out a runner trying to grab third on a potential wild pitch.
- Senior Lauren Nett and Sellers started the big bottom half by hitting back-to-back singles, advancing a bag on senior Lauren Keleher's fly out to right and reaching home on Roncin's two-RBI single through the left side.
- After Roncin scored on graduate student Lizzy Avery's RBI grounder, Doherty launched an 0-1 pitch to left with graduate student Caitlin Coker (single) on base for the 5-1 advantage.
- Yale tried to mount a rally in the sixth against Avery with a pair of singles to start, but she bounced back with a pair of strikeouts and a ground out to end the threat.
- Nett and Sellers added two more runs for BU during the bottom half by hitting back-to-back singles to start and eventually scoring on Roncin's RBI single and a rundown situation created by Coker between first and second.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Yale led off the first with a single and later the seventh with a double against Ricard but would not manage to advance either runner in a shutout loss.
- BU grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the third, as Sellers singled to right and scored on Keleher's RBI triple to right center.
- Boaz added a third run in the fourth with two outs by hitting a pitch off the third base bag and scoring on sophomore Brooke Deppiesse's RBI double down the left field line.
- The Terriers doubled their lead in the fifth with three runs off four hits, including Doherty's two-RBI single up the middle and Boaz's RBI triple to right.
- With two outs in the sixth, Keleher singled up the middle and sped around the bases when Yale was unable to catch Roncin's bloop single on a diving attempt in center.
- Ricard tallied a pair of strikeouts and a ground out in the seventh to seal the shutout.
- Improving to 14-8 all-time in the series, BU earned its third DH sweep over the Bulldogs in nine attempts following last year's split. BU previously accomplished the feat at Yale in 1995 and at home in 1992.
- Both Roncin and Doherty increased their number of multi-RBI games to six total on the season.
- Keleher's streak of successfully reaching base was halted in the first contest at 19 straight contests. Coker now owns the team's longest active streak at 11 games.
- Nett became the sixth different Terrier to earn three hits in a contest this year.
- Ricard owns six solo shutouts in 13 starts after totaling seven in 18 starts last spring.
- BU will next open Patriot League play at Army West Point on Saturday (March 23) with a doubleheader set for a 12 p.m. start.
- BU leads the all-time series, 26-11, having won the last 10 meetings, including the 2023 Patriot League title game with a 2-0 decision.
- In their last visit to West Point, the Terriers pulled out a pair of extra-inning victories (2-0 / 8 inn., 2-1 / 9 inn.) and then an 11-1 (5) run-rule decision.
