Terrier Twelve - #4: Men's Tennis Earns First NCAA Appearance with Patriot League Title

July 23, 2024

Returning for a 16th year, the Terrier Twelve recognizes the top achievements of Boston University teams and student-athletes from the previous year. In 2023-24, over half of BU's teams either won a conference title or finished runner-up at their league championship, and all of those programs will be represented in the countdown. Check back each Tuesday and Friday this summer as we unveil this year's Terrier Twelve on GoTerriers.com.

Coming in at number four in this year's Terrier Twelve is men's tennis, which posted a sweep against Patriot League opponents en route to the program's first ever NCAA appearance. BU also garnered multiple major-year end awards from the conference for the first time.

The Terriers recorded 21 victories, including non-conference wins against regional rivals in Brown and Fordham, after posting 14 wins in 2023 and a combined nine victories over the previous three years. During Patriot League play, BU went 6-0 to enter the conference tournament as the top seed for the first time and added wins over Holy Cross and tournament host Army West Point to reach the championship round for the second consecutive season.

After dropping a tightly-contested doubles point, the Terriers rallied to eliminate five-time defending champion Navy, 4-3, with sophomore Jakob Esterowitz winning a thrilling three-set tiebreaker to help BU hoist its first conference title since capturing the America East championship in 1996. Classmates Corey Craig and Alejandro Licea both rolled in straight sets, and freshman Gustavs Dambins rallied from a set down to put all eyes on Esterowitz's match.

Named a conference-record six-time PL Player of the Week, Craig won 36 of 45 singles games played over the three-day event to earn PL Tournament MVP honors. He finished the spring, 26-1, in the top slot to add the program's first-ever PL Player of the Year honor to BU's well-deserved awards haul. Esterowitz joined Craig in receiving All-PL First Team recognition, while Dambins earned a spot on the second team alongside sophomore Alejandro Licea.

Dambins took second on the team with 14 singles wins during the spring and kept the PL Rookie of the Year award on campus after Craig first earned the honor in 2023. Senior Ben Letzer and junior Dion Loutas also posted double-digit victories.

In doubles play, Craig and Esterowitz teamed for an 8-4 dual record, while senior Jonah Dickson and junior Adrian Pawlowski tied Licea and senior Johann Sajonz at seven wins apiece.

On the sideline, 10th-year head coach Dejan Stankovic was named PL Coach of the Year after reaching the 100-win milestone. Both he and assistant Jesse Frieder ('14), a former team captain, led BU to an NCAA opening round clash at No. 12 Harvard and its highest ranking this century in the ITA's year-end New England regional poll behind four Ivy League schools.

The NCAA started awarding automatic berths to conference champions during the 1999 season.
