Terriers Snag Thrilling 3-2 Victory Over Raiders

HAMILTON, N.Y. – Goals from juniors Giulianna Gianino and Margy Porta as well as sophomore Kaiya Stewart powered the Boston University women's soccer program to a 3-2 win over Colgate on Wednesday evening at the Beyer-Small '76 Field.

BU (1-6-3, 1-0-1 PL) overcame two deficits against the Raiders (2-8-1, 0-2-0 PL), and did not lead the match until the final 2:12 on the clock, when Gianino potted a corner kick into the net.

Freshman goalkeeper Bridget Carr registered a career-high 11 saves. In addition to BU's goal scorers, sophomore Samantha Aronson and freshman Juliana Osterman notched assists on Stewart's tally.

Ari Bezanson scored twice for Colgate on eight shots, six of which were on target. Ellie Stokes assisted on both goals, with Jordan Juetten adding a helper. Ella Poppinga made two saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Colgate registered the first shot of the match 2:03 in, as Paige Foa turned on a ball inside the six-yard box and rifled a shot wide right.
  • BU earned a corner kick in the fifth minute, and the insert bounced on the ground without contact multiple times, leading to a Raider marker on the goal line to clear it away.
  • Three minutes later, Stokes worked down the right wing and into the box for a rolling shot that Carr crouched down to save.
  • Sophie Wand's one-timer in the 15th minute forced Carr to dive to her right to make the save. Carr would rack up three more saves in the next three minutes.
  • Colgate broke the ice in the 19th minute when Stokes' cross found Bezanson from 20 yards away, with the senior zipping a shot into the upper-middle of the net.
  • Gianino rocketed BU's first shot of the match from 30 yards out to the upper-left corner, but Poppinga lifted the shot over the crossbar in the 30th minute.
  • BU leveled the score in the 34th minute. Osterman prevented the ball from crossing the end line and crossed it to a cutting Stewart, who finished in the lower-left corner past Poppinga.
  • Carr racked up her ninth save of the first half on a diving stop to her left on Bezanson's 20-yard blast in the 41st minute, keeping the score 1-1 at the break.
  • The Raiders went back in front in the 53rd minute when Bezanson delivered a 12-yard shot past Carr to finish Stokes' cross.
  • Senior Allison Hanlon served a ball from the left sideline towards the top of the box. Porta turned to her left to shake off multiple Raider defenders before whipping a left-footed shot into the goal in the 58th minute.
  • Both teams had goals called off within a span of six minutes on corner kicks due to fouls.
  • Nearing 10 minutes on the clock, Bezanson whipped a shot on goal that Carr leaped to her left to send over the woodwork.
  • Sophomore Samantha Aronson's shot coaxed Poppinga to deflecting the chance beyond the crossbar. On the corner kick, Gianino's ball swung in and bounced once before tucking into the lower-right corner of the net with 2:12 to play.
STATS
  • Shots favored Colgate, 21-6, including a 13-5 advantage on goal.
  • Gianino paced BU with three shots.
  • Nine of Carr's 11 saves occurred in the first half.
  • The Raiders generated eight corner kicks to the Terriers' five.

  • Gianino's game-winner was the third of her career, and her first since Sept. 10, 2023 at New Hampshire.
  • Porta has now scored in three-consecutive games, becoming the first Terrier to do so since Gianino in 2023 from Sept. 24 to Oct. 7.
  • Stewart's goal was the first in her collegiate tenure.
  • Carr's 11 saves are tied for the sixth-most in a single game from a BU goalkeeper, and the most since Morgan Messner racked up 12 saves on Sept. 5, 2019.
  • Aronson's assist was her second as a Terrier, and first since Aug. 27, 2023 against UAlbany.
  • Osterman notched her first-career point. She is the third Terrier this season to achieve that feat, joining junior Morgan Weaver and classmate Jaiden Schultz.
  • BU improves to 11-4-1 all-time against Colgate, capturing its first road win over the Raiders since Oct. 27, 2018.
