Terriers Edged by Providence in Shootout

BOSTON - The Boston University field hockey team opened its 2025 campaign with a 3-2 shootout loss at home to Providence on Friday at New Balance Field.
After giving up an early goal, the Terriers took a 2-1 lead late in the third quarter. The Friars leveled the score early in the fourth before two scoreless rounds of overtime. PC clinched the win in the shootout by a score of 3-1.
Junior Nicole Lauro and senior Martu Coulo scored for the Terriers while sophomore Abbey Chun made seven saves in her first career start.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Providence scored on its first shot of the game as Piper Cline tipped in a bid from Carly van Benten just 3:09 into the contest.
- The Terriers would get an equalizer before the opening quarter ended as junior Maggie Driscoll found Lauro off a restart in the right side of the circle, where she blasted a high shot to the far corner at the 13:29 mark.
- The Friars earned the game's first two corners in the second quarter but BU successfully defended them to keep it a 1-1 affair at the half.
- The Terriers took the lead in the 45th minute off a flurry on a corner.
- After an initial shot by junior Alex Purcell was saved, classmate Bella Bergner forced a PC defender to make a save on a rebound attempt, allowing Coulo to punch in the loose ball at the goalmouth for a 2-1 lead.
- The one-goal edge lasted just over two minutes, however, as van Basten snuck a ball to Johanna Mahner.
- Chun made five of her seven saves after halftime, including three impressive stops that kept the Friars from regaining the lead.
- Junior Maggie Driscoll and sophomore Shea Freda each had defensive saves for the Terriers with the score at 2-2.
- BU had the better of the chances in the first overtime but could not take advantage of them.
- The Friars kept the Terriers on their heels in the second extra session before the teams headed to the shootout.
- Neither team converted in the first round while both were successful in the second.
- The Friars got conversions in the third and fourth rounds while stopping BU's attempts to clinch the victory.
GAME NOTES
- BU held a 21-17 shot advantage and put 14 shots on goal to PC's 11.
- The Friars earned 12 corners to BU's eight.
- Ava Porter made 11 saves for PC while teammate Macie Pennisi earned a defensive save.
- Coulo had BU's lone successful attempt in the shootout.
- Chun was one of six players to make collegiate debuts for the Terriers on Friday, joining five freshmen.
UP NEXT
- The Terriers have a week off before returning to action with a home contest against Vermont on Friday, Sept. 5.
- Game time at New Balance Field is set for 4 p.m.
