King Hurls No Hitter as Terriers Sweep Vermont
April 13, 2001 | Softball
Boston - Boston University senior pitcher Robyn King threw her second career no hitter, blanking the Vermont Catamounts, 5-0, in the first game of an America East doubleheader at the B. U. Softball Field. Sophomore pitcher Robyn Horrick threw a complete game three-hitter, pacing the Terriers to a 5-0 win in the second game.
Boston University, the visiting team despite playing on its home field (due to field conditions at Vermont’s Post Field), continued a trend of jumping on teams early, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. Freshman center fielder Abbey Pauley scored the first run of the game on a bunt single by King. Two batters later, sophomore left fielder Tiffany Finateri hit a two-run triple to center field, scoring King and junior third baseman Aryn Rangel to give B. U. a 3-0 lead.
In the fifth inning, the Terriers worked the double steal to perfection, allowing senior catcher Leslie Linnemeyer to score from third to put B. U. up 4-0. Rangel then plated senior second baseman Kerry Herr with a groundout to second.
King (7-1), this week’s America East Pitcher of the Week, earned her first no-hitter since pitching a perfect game against Drexel on April 29, 2000. The right hander struck out 10 Catamount batters while walking three.
Horrick (8-5) struck out seven and walked none, giving up three base hits for the complete game victory in the second game. The offense scored three runs in the top of the third, as Pauley and senior left fielder Courtney Herr scored as sophomore designated player Karen Seidler reached on an error by the first baseman. King then delivered an RBI double to center field, allowing Seidler to score.
Rangel and Finateri each got RBI singles in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively, to put the game out of reach.
For Vermont, senior Cheri Toms (1-7) got the loss in the first game, and sophomore Angie Totaro (3-5) was charged with the loss in the second game.
B. U. improved to 19-11, 7-3 in America East play, extending its winning streak to nine games. Vermont falls to 5-14, 0-10 in the league.
The Terriers and Catamounts meet again in a doubleheader on Saturday, April 14, at the B. U. Softball Field. Game time is 12 p.m.
