Softball Sweeps Vermont; Blanks Catamounts in All Four Games
April 14, 2001 | Softball
Boston - Senior pitcher Robyn King gave up Vermont’s only hit of the game in the Catamounts last at bat, going on to one-hit UVM, 8-0, in the second game of a doubleheader sweep on Saturday at the B. U. Softball Field. B. U. won the first game, 1-0, in an 11-inning pitcher’s duel.
The Terriers’ sophomore pitcher Robyn Horrick and Vermont pitcher Kara Massey each pitched 11 innings in the first game. The two teams entered the final inning tied, 0-0. Senior pinch hitter Kenya Palmer, seeing her first action since injuring her right foot 15 games ago, singled to the left side - then proceeded to steal second base - setting the stage for sophomore right fielder Tiffany Finateri’s two-out game-winning double to deep center field.
The 1-0 win was the Terriers’ 10th in a row. B. U. would go on to extend that streak to 11 with the 8-0 win in the second game. It is the longest B. U. winning streak since the team won 16 in a row last season.
Horrick (9-5) allowed three Catamount hits and three walks, while striking out nine batters. Massey (1-3) gave up nine hits and issued three walks, striking out six Terrier batters.
King (7-1) came within one out of recording her second consecutive no-hitter. Vermont senior Amanda Surgen broke up the no-hit bid with a bloop single to shallow left. King did not give up a hit in a 5-0 win over Vermont on Friday. Vermont’s Angie Totaro (3-6) was charged with the loss.
Finateri continued her hot hitting streak, going 3-for-4 in the second game with four RBI. Senior second baseman Kerry Herr went 1-for-4 with three RBI. Junior third baseman Aryn Rangel and sophomore designated player Nichole Kurker each went 2-for-4 for the Terriers.
B. U. improved to 21-11, 9-3 in America East play. Vermont falls to 5-16, 0-12 in the league.
The Terriers host America East rival Maine for a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 17. Game time is 2 p.m.
