Softball Sweeps Maine For 13th-Straight Win

Boston – The Boston University softball team improved its home record to a spotless 11-0 with a two-game sweep of the University of Maine on Tuesday at the B. U. Softball Field. The Terriers won the first game, 4-1, then took the second game, 3-0.
In the first contest, Maine scored a run on B. U. pitching for the first time in 48 innings – a period spanning seven games – with a two-out, RBI single from pitcher Ashley Yuhas in the top of the first inning to put the Black Bears up 1-0. Left fielder Amanda Stevens scored on the play.
B. U. answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, on an RBI single up the middle by junior third baseman Aryn Rangel to score senior second baseman Kerry Herr to tie the score, 1-1.
Senior catcher Leslie Linnemeyer put the Terriers ahead, 3-1, with her first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field that plated sophomore short stop Kristin Knesek. B. U. added a run in the sixth inning as sophomore right fielder Tiffany Finateri scored on a single by sophomore pitcher Robyn Horrick.
Horrick (10-5) got the win, going the distance for 10th time this season. The right-hander didn’t allow a hit after the first inning, and retired 19 Maine batters in a row, striking out six batters while not allowing a walk. Yuhas pitched 1.2 innings was charged with the loss after giving up three runs on five hits.
Robyn King (9-1) took the mound in the second game and tied a B. U. season high with 12 strikeouts. She gave up five hits, and walked one. She has not allowed a run in her last six appearances (36.2 innings).
The Terriers got all the runs they needed in the third inning, as Rangel homered to center field, scoring Kerry Herr to give B. U. a 2-0 lead. B. U. added a run in the fourth inning on an error by Maine center fielder Lauren Dulkis. Terrier sophomore Kate Abney scored on the play to improve B. U.’s lead to 3-0.
Maine’s Candace Jaegge pitched six innings for the loss, giving up two earned runs on seven hits and two walks, while striking out two Terrier batters.
B. U. improved to 23-11, 11-3 in America East play. Maine falls to 8-31, 3-11 in the league.
The Terriers travel down Commonwealth Avenue to face Boston College in non-conference action for two games on Thursday, April 19. Game time at BC’s Shea Field is 3:30 p.m.
