One-two punch of pitchers King and Horrick leads B. U. to 16th-straight win
Boston Boston University extended its winning streak to 16 games, sweeping conference rival Towson University on Saturday at the B. U. Softball Field. B. U. won the first game, 4-0, then took the second game, 2-1. The 16-game winning streak ties the B. U. team record, set last season.
Senior pitcher Robyn King (10-1) struck out a season- and team-high 13 Tiger batters in the first game, allowing just one hit and one walk. It is the second complete game one-hitter in the past three games for King, who also no-hit Vermont on April 13. King has not allowed a run in 43.2 consecutive innings.
B. U. posted three runs in the bottom of the fourth, as King hit a two-run triple to left-center field to put the Terriers up 2-0. The next batter, senior left fielder Courtney Herr, drove in King to increase the Terrier lead to 3-0. B. U. added an insurance run in the sixth, as junior third baseman Aryn Rangel scored on an error by Tiger pitcher Julie Hughes.
King came to the forefront in the second game as well, giving B. U. a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a sacrifice fly to center field to score senior center fielder Kenya Palmer.
Towson tied the game in the sixth inning, getting an RBI double from sophomore second baseman Chris Navarro, scoring freshman right fielder Sara Foster. B. U. would answer immediately, regaining the lead in the bottom of the inning, as senior catcher Leslie Linnemeyer singled up the middle to score Courtney Herr from third base to give B. U. a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
Sophomore pitcher Robyn Horrick (12-5) went the distance for B. U., giving up four hits and two walks while striking out seven. Towson's senior pitcher Kathleen O'Hara was charged with the loss.
B. U. improves to 26-11, 13-3 in America East play, while Towson falls to 24-19-1, 8-9-1 in league play.
B. U. will attempt to set a new record for consecutive wins as they and Towson meet in a doubleheader on Sunday, April 22. Game time is 12 p.m. As part of senior day activities, the Terriers' five seniors will be recognized in a between-games ceremony.
