West Hartford, Conn. - The Boston University softball team continued its hot streak in conference play, sweeping the University of Hartford on Saturday, 3-1, and 6-0. The two wins - the Terriers' 16th conference win in a row - keeps B. U. atop the America East standings with two games to play.
Senior pitcher Robyn King (12-1) threw a complete-game, three-hitter in game one. The righthander struck out 10 Hartford batters while walking only two. The complete-game shutout is King's eighth in nine conference starts, she has not given up an earned run in any of her nine league starts this season.
B. U. took a 1-0 lead in the second inning off an RBI single by junior third baseman Aryn Rangel that scored sophomore left fielder Tiffany Finateri. The Terriers sealed the victory in the sixth frame, when they capitalized on three Hawk errors to score four runs and take a commanding 5-0 lead. B. U. added a run in the seventh inning, as King hit an RBI triple to right center that plated sophomore first baseman Janine Valente.
Junior pitcher Liz Nadeau (6-8) took the loss for the Hawks. She gave up four earned runs on 10 hits, while walking one and striking out five.
The Terriers second-game win was fueled by senior Kenya Palmer's two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning the broke open what was a 1-1 game. Freshman left fielder Abbey Pauley also scored on the play. For Palmer it was her first home run of the season.
The two teams traded runs earlier in the game, as B. U. opened the scoring in the fourth inning off a throwing error that allowed Palmer to score from second. Hartford scored its only run of the day in the sixth inning, as Nadeau scored on a fielding error by sophomore shortstop Kristin Knesek to tie the game at 1-1.
Robyn Horrick (14-7) pitched eight innings, allowing one unearned run. She gave up four hits and struck out eight batters, and did not give up any walks. Junior pitcher Andi Miller (7-4) was charged with the loss for Hartford, which falls to 13-15, 11-7 in conference.
