Last season Enos helped lead the Terriers to an overall record of 16-7-0 and a 9-0-0 mark in conference play. |
BOSTON -- Former Terrier women's soccer standout Deidre Enos has been named to the final 19-player roster of the Philadelphia Charge of the women's professional soccer league, the WUSA. Enos is the only player from America East to make the final roster of any of the league's eight teams.
"It has not hit me yet," said Enos, a few days after learning she had made the roster. "I am both excited and relieved."
Enos and 27 other hopefuls reported to the Charge's camp on February 28th. Shortly thereafter, they traveled to California where pre-season camp was held at San Juan Capistrano.
Then, in mid-March, Charge head coach Mark Krikorian pared the roster to 20 players. Then, the final cuts were made on March 30th.
"Camp was like a roller coaster for me," said Enos, a native of Milton, MA and a graduate of Milton High School. "I would have a good day of practice one day and feel that I had a good chance to make the team. Then, the next day, I might not have a good day, and I would wonder what I was doing."
One of the factors that worked to Enos' benefit was Coach Krikorian.
Prior to his being named the Charge's head coach, he was the head women's soccer coach at the University of Hartford and watched Enos during her four-year career.
He saw her two years ago, when, as a junior, she was named the America East Player of the Year. She led the conference in points per game with 1.76, while she was second in the league in goals with 16 and points with 37. She helped lead the Terriers to an overall record of 13-8-0 and an 8-1-0 record in the league.
Krikorian also saw Enos play this past season when she repeated as the Conference's Player of the Year. Once again, she led the league in points per game with 1.87, while she led America East and was tied for 16th in the nation in goals per game with 0.87.
She finished the year with school single-season records for goals with 20 and points with 43. She graduated as the Terriers' all-time leader in goals with 51 and points with 121.
This past season, she helped lead the Terriers to an overall record of 16-7-0 and a 9-0-0 mark in the league. They won both the regular-season and post-season titles and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, and Enos was named All-American.
Two of the wins this past year were against Hartford--3-0 during the regular-season and 4-1 in the post-season tournament title game. In the two games, Enos had a total of three goals.
Thus, when it came time for the professional league's supplemental draft, and Enos was still available, Krikorian drafted her.
"He knew what my strengths were when camp began," said Enos, whose speed was a trademark of her play during her collegiate career and continued through the Charge's camp. "Coach Krikorian wants to take advantage of my speed.
"He also knows that I haven't reached my full potential yet," she went on.
Enos has already seen improvement in a couple of key areas.
"I am anticipating things more now and not just reacting," she said. "I am also initiating runs and doing more tactical things now."
One of the happiest times Enos had once she made the team was when she found out what her jersey number would be.
"I am going to be wearing number three," smiled Enos. "I have worn that number since I was about six years old. I wore it when I played youth soccer in Milton, when I played at Milton High School, and for my four years at B.U.
"Also, their uniform is red, which was the color at Milton and at B.U."
Terrier head coach Nancy Feldman expressed her excitement over Enos' selection to the Charge's roster.
"I am really thrilled for her," said Feldman. "It has been thrilling to watch her improve at every level from her being named the Conference Player of the Year two straight years, to her being named All-American, to her being selected for the senior All-Star game, to her being invited to the WUSA's tryout camp, to her being drafted, to her making the team.
"She was a bit of an unknown each step of the way, but those who knew her and saw her play aren't really surprised," the coach went on. "Everyone was confident that she would make the team.
"I honestly feel that they haven't seen anything yet," said Feldman. "'D' has tremendous potential." Feldman also feels that Enos' selection helps the Terrier program.
"I think it will give our players added confidence," said the coach. "They know that they are not that far away from being able to play at the next level. They know they played against 'D' everyday in practice, and that, if they work hard enough, they could certainly play at the next level.
"I am thrilled about 'D's selection," concluded the coach. "It is certainly exciting for her, but it is also great for our team and our program."
