BOSTON (April 7) -- The Boston University softball team took two games from Delaware in America East action on Saturday. The Terriers shutout out the Blue Hens in the first game, 5-0, then slipped past them, 5-4, in extra innings in the second game.
Senior pitcher Robyn King (5-1) pitched a complete-game in the first contest, scattering four hits. She struck out 12 Blue Hen batters, and struck out the side in the second and third innings.
The Terriers opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning, as sophomore designated player Karen Seidler hit a two-run single to right field, scoring King and freshman center fielder Abbey Pauley.
Senior catcher Leslie Linnemeyer hit a second-inning sacrifice fly to center, scoring sophomore shortstop Kristin Knesek to put the Terriers up 3-0. Delaware pitcher Susan Dugan fell to 7-3 with the loss.
The second game proved to be a much closer affair, with both teams scoring runs in the first two innings. Delaware's Lauren Mark hit a first-inning two-run double to give UD a short-lived 2-0 lead. Boston University followed with a run in the bottom of the inning on a Rangel RBI single to score senior second baseman Kerry Herr.
After Delaware added another run in the top of the second to go up 3-1, B. U. sophomore pitcher Robyn Horrick hit a two-run single, scoring Knesek and sophomore left fielder Tiffany Finateri to tie the score at 3-3.
The two teams each scored single runs in the fifth inning and headed into extra innings tied at 4-4. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Knesek won the game with a deep fly to center field that hit the bottom of the fence, scoring sophomore Kate Abney from second base for the win.
King, who relieved Horrick with one out in the seventh inning, struck out four of the eight batters she faced and was credited with the win. Delaware's Amanda Cariello was charged with the loss and fell to 3-5.
The Terriers improve to 14-11 overall and 3-3 in league play. B. U. is now 6-0 on its new home turf. Delaware falls to 11-12 and 4-6 in America East play.
