Softball Sweeps Delaware; Takes All Four Games In Series

Boston, Mass. (April 9) -- B. U. got strong pitching efforts from sophomore Robyn Horrick and senior Robyn King, pacing the Terriers to a sweep of the Delaware Blue Hens at the B. U. Softball Field on Monday. The Terriers improve to 16-11 overall, 5-3 in America East play. Delaware falls to 11-13, 4-7 in league play.
In the opening game, Horrick (6-5) gave up just one earned run in seven innings of work. She allowed eight hits and struck out a season-high 12 Blue Hen batters. B. U. got all the offense it needed in the bottom of the first inning, as Horrick and sophomore shortstop Kristin Knesek each hit RBI singles to give B. U. a 3-0 lead after one inning.
Delaware cut the lead to two runs in the top of the sixth inning, as Carolyn Wasilewski scored on a Lauren Mark RBI double to center field. The Blue Hens’ Susan Dugan (7-4) was tagged with the loss.
In the second game, B. U. again raced out to the quick start, going up 1-0 in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by King, plating freshman center fielder Abbey Pauley.
King was further helped by the home run ball, as sophomore Nichole Kurker blasted a solo shot to right center field to extend the Terrier lead to 2-0.
B. U. broke the game open in the sixth. Following a sacrifice fly by Knesek which scored King, sophomore left fielder Tiffany Finateri hit a two-run home run to straight away center field to make the score 5-0.
King (6-1) went the distance for the Terriers, allowing six hits and striking out 10 batters for the win. In 15.2 innings pitched in the series, King did not allow a single run, and struck out 26 Delaware batters. Amanda Cariello (3-6) got the loss for Delaware.
Boston University returns to action on Wednesday, April 11, when it travels to Worcester, Mass. to take on Holy Cross. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
